The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Busy week - I have been canning or freezing one or two batches of something every day this week. Even the 2 days that Hubby was in hospital till his blood tests normalized. Doc said he never saw anyone normalize so fast.
Hubby got out of hospital, took the afternoon off and went back to work pouring concrete the next day. He is amazing @ 74 years old.
Taking a little break, but got to get back to processing soon. Also have to get all fresh produce processed or stored in Frig or freezer before we leave tomorrow morning. Washing and drying clothes and packing too(for our 3 day weekend trip.
So I won't have loads of time today. I'll be on and off the computer the rest of the day. Hope all is well with everyone. I continue to pray for Johnny and Arrowhead.
Have a great weekend and God Bless.
Pinging the List.
I planted too many tomatoes again.
LOL and they all ripen at the same time... ;-)
We just had the weird thing happen, stuff actually falling from the sky...It won't amount to much but it will be the only rain this month. Ouch.
Otherwise it's simply survival time for most things. Tomatoes are just about finished and I'm baking trying to keep the newly planted plum and apple trees from baking along with me.
Have a great trip.
Our four o'clocks are an old time favorite of ours which we have grown wherever we went. Well, now we have them in Memphis, TN. They are hugh! They have closed blooms by the thousands which will not open. They are like minister's daughter on a prom date!
Why won't my flowers open?
Hi greeneyes! Great news about your guy! Things are picking up here. DH started a new job on Monday & loves it so far. 86 degrees would be heaven! We’re into the 100s, long term it looks like. :melt:
Now that the financials are taken care of, I can start working on the garden again- for Fall, I guess. YAY!! lol or maybe that’s Yum!.
Johnny has been missing. adding extra prayers for both he & Arrowhead.
Y’all have a safe & fun trip. Hope it involves nature
& fish?
God Bless.
Here in the Charlotte are of NC my tomatoes have done diddly this year.
Extra is good. We always plant too much of everything. That way when something doesn’t do well we get some, and if the critters steal, we still get some. LOL
Some rain is better than no rain. Wish you had some of ours. Our tomatoes have had way too much water. Thanks for the well wishes.
Maybe they don’t know it’s 4 o’clock?
Finally enough sunny days strung together that I’ve been able to get back to my pond cleaning project. There’s still a big mudhole in the middle, but enough space to work around it.
My summer squash all croaked from the heat earlier in the week. Tomatoes still look like crap. I should be buried in tomatoes but I’m barely getting enough to satisfy my cravings for BLT sandwich. Cucumbers are about done I think.
It’s almost time to start sowing fall greens. I don’t quite know how we got here, but tomorrow it will be August.
Going to visit Baker’s Creek Seed farm. Close on sale of Hubby’s Mom’s house, and clean up our house in Springfield. Hope to get it ready to sell some time this fall.
Glad you got a little rain. All I got was thunder sounds, and clouds.
In the garden, I have several cucuzza, a few cukes, and lemon boy tomatoes. I’ve started my fall planting of squash, and tomatoes. The heat makes me less than enthusiastic here in Central TX.
I too am mystified. I blinked and missed Spring and the growing season. LOL
Couldn’t resist a little joke. I don’t know for sure why, but the link below states that they open when the temperature drops and maybe your temp is too high?

Here in the upper midwest one could not ask for a finer growing season. This weeks version of Mary's blossoms is long on lilies:
“We just had the weird thing happen, stuff actually falling from the sky...It won’t amount to much but it will be the only rain this month. Ouch.”
You must be in my neighborhood. Just rained less than an hour ago.
Garden in Central Texas... If I want to put something in the ground now, what is the best veggies to toss in? Remember, it is very hot and very sunny where I am.
Also, anyone know of some home concoction to keep a very hungry and curious dog out of the garden? He gets over the fence. I was thinking of calling the cops and telling them I have a bug in my driveway. This way they can come over and shoot the dog. ....kidding.
Oh well, the seed farm is fun (lol or trouble, if you’re like me).
And I am still amazed that I grew up without AC. Guess I was tougher back then.
