Spanish mayor institutes daily nap time for entire city

ADOR, Spain, - A Spanish mayor has become the first in the country to issue a proclamation creating an official afternoon nap time for the entire city.

Mayor Joan Faus Vitoria of Ador in Valencia declared 2 to 5 p.m. as the official time for the city's residents to take their afternoon siestas.

The edict asks residents to keep quiet during the siesta hours and the mayor recommended children be kept inside to prevent noise from traveling into open windows.

The mayor said the nap time was chosen due to the high afternoon heat making 2 to 5 p.m. the ideal time to take a break from working in fields.

Vitoria said there will be no penalties for violations, and the edict should be treated as "merely a suggestion" rather than an "obligation."

A study published in the Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism in February espoused the health benefits of an afternoon siesta.

"Our data suggests a 30-minute nap can reverse the hormonal impact of a night of poor sleep," said study author Brice Faraut of the Universite Paris Descartes-Sorbonne Paris Cite in France. "This is the first study that found napping could restore biomarkers of neuroendocrine and immune health to normal levels."

“And stereotypes do not exist in a vacuum...”

When I visited the family of a friend of mine in Vietnam we had a nice lunch including a couple of beers, and then my host asked me if I’d like to go into the guest room and take a nap. I said “No thanks”, but then realized that everyone else was going to, so I did too.

Not as strange as in Thailand, where I’ve had people ask me if I’d like to take a shower. Which in a few cases I’ve taken them up on, like after being stuck in traffic in the back of a pickup truck for a few hours.

I was visiting a friend a few weeks ago and he naps every day when he isn’t working....which explains the quadruple bypass a few years ago.

I go for a walk/run. It has the same effect.

Funny about Thailand, isn’t it.

I’ve had guests ask me if I’d mind if they took a shower; disorienting until I got used to it, and something I’ve never seen anywhere else in the world!

The Urban Sombrero could make a comeback.

-—I’ve had guests ask me if I’d mind if they took a shower;-—

From what I’ve heard the Thai are fanatic about their showers!

Then there are the ladies who clean the restrooms while you’re in there doing your business. No worries about “closed for maintenance”.

And the guys in the restrooms of discoteques who give you a shoulder massage when you’re standing at the urinals.

I always say, "No problem, but I'm showering with you."

If the Spanish weren’t not up until 4am drinking every night, they wouldn’t need to sleep from 2-5pm.
Dang those people can party.

As my narcoleptic mother-in-law once said: “I don’t take naps. Naps take me.”

The urban sombrero comes in handy for the afternoon of the morning-after. But for the night-before, I recommend the detox poncho.

looking to pick up Day Laborers at the Home Despot between 2 and 5pm,

I don’t think you’d find them after say 8 am or so here in the states.
