A Kentucky 8th grade exam from 1912 was donated to the Bullitt County history museum. The questions feature the fundamental foundation of education that we seem to have lost due to the dumbing down of the American education system.
Now with the common core epidemic we can see our youth transformed by a cookie cut education system and a near total loss of critical and independent thinking.
If you can not read the fine print or zoom in, then here are some examples of 8th grade level testing in 1912.
1) Define the following terms of government: Democracy, Limited Monarchy, Absolute Monarchy, Republic. Give Examples of Each.
2) To what four governments are students in school subjected?
3) Name 5 county officers and the principal duties of each.
4) Give 3 duties of the president. What is meant by VETO power?
5) Give at least 5 rules to be observed in maintaining good health?
6) Define Cerebrum; Cerebellum
7) Name the organs of circulation.
8) How many parts of speech are there? Define each.

Too hard. No pictures.
Hmmm...History: Name the last battle of the Civil War. We can’t have that now, can we? [sarc]
I’d love to see the common core version of this.
In eighth grade here in NYS, we took Regents in each of those subjects. We had to know a lot more than the 1912 test.
Many “top” inner city High Schoolers can’t get past 800 on the SAT.
Note: They had to WRITE their answers. Cursive, of course, has long since been discarded, along with anything and everything that educates the human mind.

Well, concerning the question about defining the various types of government (democracy, limited monarchy, absolute monarchy and republic) and giving an example of each, you could mention Obama’s rule as an example of absolute monarchy. Seriously, my grandfather and his older brother probably learned more in the one room schoolhouse they went to in rural Ontario over one hundred years ago than the little twits who go to these appalling places, particularly in California, that dare to call themselves universities. I’d dare say others here could easily express similar sentiments.
Irrelevant? How is it “IRRELEVANT” to LEARN and RETAIN the HISTORY, LAWS, POLITICAL STRUCTURE, CIVIC DUTIES and other subjects that form an educated, informed, and responsible citizen? Those who deny history are bound to repeat it. Evidence today!
"Yo! what you be called on da street?"
“It’s all about learning to learn not temporary retention.”
You can’t learn anything without learning facts. Would you prefer to go to a doctor who has only learned how to learn?

OK...Federal, State and County. What else? Not City, because not all areas are incorporated. And that would especially be true in 1912. I’m gobsmacked....
Township.
#7 in the Grammar section mentions the Lord. Imagine the fits that would cause today.
Yes, but can those children compete with today’s public school student in ways to safely engage in sodomy, the difference between transgender and transexual, or why merely being white automatically makes one a racist? See, those are the really important issues of the day. /s
— Name three rights given Congress by the Constitution —
Trick question.
Rights are not given to Congress by the Constitution. Powers are conferred to Congress by the Constitution. A power is granted, a right is inherent. For individuals only, the Constitution guarantees inherent rights and also enumerates some rights.
