Reddit interim CEO Ellen Pao has resigned from the company in the wake of an insurrection last week in which moderators shut down many of the site's most popular sections following the still-unexplained dismissal of a popular figure in the site's r/IAmA section.
Reddit made the announcement on its website and said Steve Huffman, the founder and original reddit CEO, is returning to the helm.
"We are thankful for Ellen's many contributions to reddit and the technology industry generally," the statement said. "She brought focus to chaos, recruited a world-class team of executives, and drove growth. She brought a face to reddit that changed perceptions, and is a pioneer for women in the tech industry. She will remain as an advisor to the board through the end of 2015. I look forward to seeing the great things she does beyond that."
The statement said the departure was by mutual agreement.
"In my eight months as reddit's CEO, I've seen the good, the bad and the ugly on reddit," Pao said in a separate posting on the site. "The good has been off-the-wall inspiring, and the ugly made me doubt humanity."

She's an abuser of the sexual harassment laws, and her latest escapade involved firing Victoria Taylor because an AMA actually asked difficult questions of Jesse Jackson. Faced with something firmer than the usual media softballs, the interview quickly turned into a disaster for The Reverend Jackson.
Chairman Pao couldn't have that.
Pao is a poster girl for the socialist idiots.
Reddit is in meltdown.
The hugely popular link-sharing site is in a state of virtual lockdown after the volunteers who run some of the sites biggest communities (known as subreddits) went on the digital equivalent of a general strike. This followed the sacking of Victoria Taylor, a popular site admin, after a Reddit Q&A with the Rev. Jesse Jackson went badly for the activist preacher.
...
Its another blow for interim Reddit CEO Ellen Pao, with users dubbing her Chairman Pao ever since the June crackdown.
Ellen Pao is also notorious for her opportunistic abuse of discrimination law: http://www.breitbart.com/london/2015/03/30/thankyouellenpao-only-if-you-like-bullying-vexatious-opportunists/
Yes, but the “triggering” event was an AMA session with Jesse Jackson, who did not like being asked anything. Goes to show that the man is poisonous for whoever he touches.
160 million users on countless forums for countless genres.
Do they make any profit? If so how?
Thanks FZ. I saw that in Breitbart, but it leaves out a lot of detail. Was it Taylor who did the Q&A with Jackson, or was she less directly involved? Frankly I’ve never understood how people like Jesse Jackson have so much clout, let alone credibility. RICO laws should have shut him down, as well as the greater part of Communist agitation in our country, a long time ago.
The interesting thing about this particular AMA was that although none of the questions were wildly out-of-bounds, most of them were more the kind of thing you would expect from FReepers than redditoids. Maybe there is some hope...
Some details about Jesse's strangely inappropriate responses, excerpts from which you can read in somewhat better detail than was available from Breitbart here: http://gawker.com/reddit-in-chaos-after-allegedly-firing-ama-coordinator-1715556970
Sounds like it’s been a real Chinese Fire Drill since the Jessie Jackson thing didn’t go to the liberal script.
Thanks again. That gave me precisely the context I needed to get a better grip on the issue. Sounds like the reason for Taylor’s departure are still unclear, or has the JJ AMA been determined as the cause? Meanwhile I’m somewhat astonished at the variety of ideas out there, and the formats of expression taking place. It’s all smoke and mirrors, I tell ya!
Ellen Pao’s primary care physician is an onco-gynecologist. I am glad she is gone. I wish her all the worst.
There’s a lot of trash on reddit.

BDSM gone wild - Reddit
Hi, cliff notes version due to limited time.
- admins/mods unreasonable, and in some cases corrupt dictatorial overreach censoring and banning people. Larger censorship issues are an issue with many, but that’s normal with the crazy crowd. They want completely unbridled speech, even including jailbait stuff.
- ignoring unpaid mods needs/concerns over several years.
- Firing important employees, without a replacement plan to keep commitments to outside parties. Not professional. In one case firing someone with leukemia, after making the commitment not to fire them. Plenty more stories like this.
- Completely ignoring users concerns and complaints. Sure it’s their job to run the site, but the users are the site, the community. Digg learned this lesson when they ignored their users, and lost 75% of their traffic.
- the monetizing thing is actually low on the list of most users complaints, if it’s done right.
Thank you for the list of ills despite lack of time. The Taylor incident seems to have triggered a significant uproar, so perhaps this was a watershed event of sorts.
When you have time to get back to this, I’d like your perspective on Reddit in general in terms of what it offers to the typical web surfer. My attention span with reading is not all that great, but I do like short articles of truth, virtue, substance, and interest. Being somewhat old I still cannot figure out the aim and purpose of Twitter. My take, in sum, is that it offers a window for one and all into the minutiae of deed and thought of anyone on board who cares to iterate remarks with a strict limitation on characters allowed. Could you summarize your take on Reddit in like manner?
Lastly, with all the word and text offerings emanating from tech media these days, it is as if a sanctuary is needed. A place where either there are no words, or the words are of such import that they impart rest and peace.
So basically it's Geocities.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
