The Day the Flag Went Up
SC Progressive Network ^ | BRETT BURSEY

Hollis remembers the day the Confederate flag was hoisted over the State House to commemorate the war. The centennial kicked off on April 11, 1961, with a re-creation of the firing on Fort Sumter. The flag went up for the opening celebrations.

"The flag is being flown this week at the request of Aiken Rep. John A. May," reported The State on April 12. May didn't introduce his resolution until the next legislative session. By the time the resolution passed on March 16, 1962, the flag had been flying for nearly a year. (This explains why the flag is often erroneously reported to have gone up in 1962).

"May told us he was going to introduce a resolution to fly the flag for a year from the capitol. I was against the flag going up," Hollis said, "but I kept quiet and went along. I didn't want to get into it with the UDC girls." The resolution that passed didn't include a time for the flag to come down and, therefore, "it just stayed up," Hollis said. "Nobody raised a question."

Hollis said he doesn't recall any racist or political overtones within the commission regarding the hoisting of the flag.

The day the Confederate flag went up over the State House, the opening ceremonies of the centennial in Charleston were marred by controversy. Newspapers reported the open and ugly feuding between South Carolina and the national Centennial Commission, calling it "the second battle of Fort Sumter."

This is an article from a South Carolina progressive website, a bunch of Leftists who along with Nikki Haley and the GOPe want to rid the South of its Confederate history.

The article does provide interesting background on how the Battle Flag came to be raised over the South Carolina state house on April 11, 1961.

Didn’t the Postal Service issue a stamp with that picture of Byrd after he died.

Article neatly dodges the State’s Right issues (which included slavery as a capital investment), of selective tariffs, and many other economic threats to the South.
The road to this conflict was paved with the Northern states successful efforts to count each slave as 3/5ths of a man, during the creation of the Constitution. Reason: the South wanted to increase their representation based on population, and to count slaves. The North did not want the South counting them. The compromise kept the Northern hegemony in the Congress with the greater population/representation. The issue always was.... power.

Further, more sane individuals proposed compensating slave owners, in the North and South both, by paying them for each and freeing the slaves. The war would have been averted.

That was not only a sensible suggestion, but the actual method used to abolish slavery in England two decades earlier.

However, the Democrats in the south would have none of it and rushed succession resolutions through seven states before even giving ample opportunity for debate.

Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Arkansas were actually opposed to succession up until Lincoln set troops across their borders.

WHY THE REGIME PICKED ON THE CONFEDERATE BATTLE FLAG
AND NOT ROOF’S MANIFESTO

Because it was under threat of questioning and possible impeachment proceedings by its so called political opposition the regime needed to defer or stop any movement toward this. It was necessary to use a political device usually atrributed to Saul Alinsky but used by the nazi and commie’s like Stalin with the “Kulacks” through racial division. It created persons engaged in felonious assults on authority who were black youths into; “Victims of an evil society” (thus approving their actions) out of whole cloth.

The regime began with the Zimmerman case which resulted in a series of assults by black youths on completely innocent whites,”hispanics”, and asians who were either targeted or wandered near or through black gang infested areas. The perpetators excuse; The reported “cold blood killing of Treyvon Martin because he was black”

It led to a score or more deaths and serious injuries which were treated as local news ignored and forgotten. And it was met with silence while this was happening. Neither the locqatious POTUS or his political opposition uttered as much as a “Now!,Now! or a “tsk!,tsk!”.

Those killings were referenced by the Charleston Church massacre perpetrator in his crazed manifesto.

Naturally when it was discovered that mention of those score of murders were used in this nut cases’s “manifesto” the reaction was....“Well we can’t let that out. Oh ! His face book has him holding a Confederate battle flag, (Which to many is simply an ensign of protest and rebellion), that must be his excuse “The Confederates made him do this horrible act ! Let’s get them !” Well they’re doing a good job of perverting what that battle flag’s used for at the same time ignoring the regimes complicity in engendering those previous racial incidents.

Pass it on........

and rushed succession resolutions

I think you misspelled succotash (emphasis on the suck). Good luck on acquiring internet access so you can locate an online dictionary. Most 3rd Graders have already learned that lesson - did you miss school that day?

Semi-literacy suits you.

It’s fascinating how the hard Left and the GOPe couldn’t move fast enough to exploit this murder in order to culturally cleanse the Confederate battle flag from American life. That same GOPe will pledge allegiance to the Mexican flag at every opportunity.

Right after all this nonsense started, I jokingly said to Mrs. Smittie that it wouldn't be long before they started digging up Confederate graves. I thought I was joking...

Speaking of US Postage stamps.

Robert E. Lee appears on three different US Postage stamps, Jefferson Davis appears on one, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson appears on two, Rafael Semmes on one, Joseph Johnston on one and Confederate Indian officer Stand Watie appears on one. The US Government also issued a US Postage stamp to commemorate the United Confederate Veterans. Confederate soldier Samuel Clemens “Mark Twain” also appears on a US Postage stamp.
