Archeologists Explain Historical Climate Change 4,000 Years Ago
The Costa Rica Star ^ | June 17, 2015 | David Blanco Bonilla

Caral, the Americas’ oldest civilization, located north of present day Lima, Peru, faced a grave crisis as a result of climate change some 4,000 years ago, archaeologists said.

“Droughts were so severe that they could have lasted between 60 and 130 years, which could explain why there were social crises in (civilizations like) Caral, Moche and Tiahuanaco,” archaeologist Ruth Shady, director of the Caral Project, told Efe.

Women played leading roles in Caral and a team led by Shady has been working for eight years in Vichama, an urban center near the Vegueta district, in the northern province of Huaura, that archaeologists found looted and have restored.

“Vichama pertains to the last period in the formation of the Caral civilization, starting roughly 3000 B.C., but around 1900 B.C. there was a deep crisis that we are investigating, caused by climate change,” she said.

The conditions created a “deep crisis” in Caral and the site was abandoned, while, at the same time, around 1850 B.C., development was going on at Vichama “closer to the sea and a farming and fishing urban settlement,” Shady said.

Shady described Vichama as “a very interesting site” covering 20 hectares (49.3 acres), with 10 buildings, one of which has reliefs on the façade depicting an Andean cross.

They should have known those carbon belching power plants were driving them into oblivion. Oh, and those ozone eating air conditioners and refrigerators.

Shady said this “indicates that between 1900 B.C. and the Inca era, women had a leading role in society both in the realm of religion and in political authority.”

Like the way medieval Europe, with images of the Virgin perhaps the most common of any, was dominated religiously and politically by women?

I'm always amazed by the way archeologists can find what they want to fine. For decades they had a complex explanation about the Maya civilization. It was a peaceful society dominated by gentle priests.

Then they deciphered their writing and this beautiful theory was raped and murdered by a gang of brutal facts.

The Maya were actually as violent as any people in history, delighting in public torture and human sacrifice and engaging massive wars sometimes lasting over a century.

Do you think the author could have crammed any more separate thoughts into a single sentence?

Here's the odd part. Ran across a paper by Shady and colleagues. I think they're talking about the same area.

Drought isn't mentioned. Earthquakes, landslides and blowing sand caused the damage.

We just had a “climate change” in the last 6 hours...It has gone from dry 100 degrees to a wet 85 degrees...

Does that mean it’s all over for us????

It stopped raining in the inland valleys of Peru. Spelled death for those societies. And there was nothing men could do to either stop it — or cause it.

I don’t think it ever rained much in those valleys. Not since people have lived there, anyway.

The original civilization seems to have been based mostly on catching fish and eating it. The main crop was cotton for nets. It was grown on irrigated land, so the only drought that would affect them much was if it were to stop snowing in the Andes, kind of like it has in the CA Sierra. Which is possible I suppose.

The city nearest this site averages about an inch of rain per year.

"Do you think the author could have crammed any more separate thoughts into a single sentence?"

No, no. There is room of at least one semi-colon. For instance:

“Women played leading roles in Caral and a team led by Shady has been working for eight years in Vichama, an urban center near the Vegueta district, in the northern province of Huaura, that archaeologists found looted and have restored; which requires further funding to determine what white males did to destroy the climate in that area of the world.”

You’re not suggesting they change their conclusions to fit the current agenda, are you?

Sounds Shady to me......

I read once that Caral has the oldest and largest pyramid in the world.

The 5,000-Year-Old Pyramid City Of Caral

"It is widely taught in the field of ancient history that Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, and India, gave rise to the first civilizations of mankind. However, few are aware that at the same time, and in some cases before some of these societies emerged, another great civilization had sprouted - the Norte Chico civilization of Supe, Peru – the first known civilization of the Americas. Their capital was the Sacred City of Caral – a 5,000-year-old metropolis complete with complex agricultural practices, rich culture, and monumental architecture, including six large pyramidal structures, stone and earthen platform mounds, temples, amphitheatre, sunken circular plazas, and residential areas."
