Shorn or hairy: Female underarms having a mainstream moment

NEW YORK (AP) -- On social media and red carpets, from New York to China, hairy underarms are having a mainstream moment.

Women are proudly showing off their growth on Instagram and YouTube, and it's not just Miley Cyrus anymore. Jemima Kirke of "Girls" flashed her fair-colored au naturel look - earning some cringes - at the June 1 CFDA awards, one of the top fashion events of the year.

I would generally agree with you. However, my daughter died several years ago. When her son (my grandson) turned 18 the first thing he did was go get a tat of a cross on his back bearing the name of his mom. He rarely goes shirtless and I know one of the reasons he did it was because his dad told him not to. Parents were divorced and he did it not only to honor his mom but in a show of defiance to his dad.

Actually it is the porn industry who has inspired this trend of shaved pubic hair. Its for aestetic purposes only. There is some research that shows unshaven helps to keep out nasty stuff in most women. Shaved pubic hair IMHO is grosser than unshaved armpits. It makes me think I’d be doing it with a 10-12 year old.

Actually it is the porn industry who has inspired this trend of shaved pubic hair.

Apparently inspired by an old nude shot of Demi Moore in which, I am told, she looks as if she is smuggling a weasel between her legs.

My mother (the source of the Indian ancestry) was the same way- only more so. Not even the fine, sparse white hair I have on my legs. She had NO hair whatsoever on her legs or pits- but had a mane of wavy black hair.

Totally agree. Shaving/waxing is for hygiene in these areas and it is a good thing. If you want the hygiene of a gorilla, remember that gorillas love each other’s stink and never shower.

I would also like to add that I was horrified when I first saw the tattoo trend on women and young women. Tattoos on girls in the before the late 90’s was a sign that they were trash. Now everyone, including my daughter (near heart attack on my part) has them. I still think they are trashy. I will never change my mind about that.

The question is this. What will those tattoos look like when the taut skin wrinkles and the tattoo is no longer identifiable.

I’ve been all over the U.S. and I’ve seen the difference between Northern and Southern women. The mos beautiful Northern women I’ve seen would probably be beat out by a Southern gal randomly chosen in a mall in a beauty contest.

I had a female cousin who was not the prettiest apple in the basket and she had a cruddy attitude around people other than family. In the early 70s we went canoeing for about two hours and she sure had the hairy armpits. It was quite unnerving to see for a teenager like me.

She "came out" in the late 70s. Her bad attitude ensured she never got a decent job and she never had a stable relationship with any of her girlfriends.

Not to disparage Southern women in the least....but when I was 25 and single I lived in a rural county in Michigan where the local eligible female population kept my tongue hanging out of my mouth for the entire time I lived there.

There’s no explaining what turns some guys on and turns others off. Some like hair, some don’t. Some like big derrieres and some like BIG girls. It’s a good thing. It gives everybody a chance for love.

I can’t help but find male and female underarm growth equally unpleasing. Not really keen on the look of men who had shaved there either, so I guess I’m just a fan of sleeved shirts.
