The same can be said for Costa Rica. I have experienced it in depth up close and personal, and my assessment: A third world country with a thin veneer of advanced First World glitz...
With some primitive unexpected issues that are hard to believe. Like the 40% of the crowded Capital that uses septic systems. Outside of the capital it's worse. Unless you can choose to and can afford to live in a modern hotel permanently!
Even then you can expect facilities that we take for granted to be unavailable for days at a time.

If/when they emerge from their bunker they’ll find that they are now the poorest people in town.

It’s interesting that some of these “Third World” countries have some North American First World values, but from the 50s and 60s. Smaller government, individual initiative, etc.
To be fair, its probably not that these governments in places like Belize don’t want to be as totalitarian as the Left in the US wants to be; they just don’t have the resources. Therefore, they have smaller government and, on a day to day basis, WAY more freedom.
As part of this (speaking about Belize), their legal system is so clogged up that almost no one uses it. And here, my fellow freedom lovers is the best part— the Belize legal system is “loser pays”. And if the losing client doesn’t have the money to pay, the Belizean court makes the attorney of the loser pay. Therefore, they don’t have silly lawsuits.

Be sure to check on health care and medicine availability. I have a FRiend who used to spend a fair amount of time down there, and though he liked Belize, when he got into his early 70s, he quit going because the health care is (or was then) kinda sketchy.

I am very interested in medical tourism. It is socialized medicine in Belize and the good healthcare appears to be only in Belize (Craphole) City.
If Panama was smart, they would incorporate hospitals and retirement communities like they do here in Southern AZ.
Just got back from dinner with my husband, and we ran into a doc he used to work with. The doctor said he stopped going to Guatemala to do charitable work because one of the buses that was in his convey went to the next destination without police escort and they were robbed and one doctor was killed for giving the robbers gruff.
The authorities escorted the doctodrs to the American embassy and they slept on the floor because the robbers took their passports as well as valuables and money. In Guatemala, you have to have your passport on your person (he kept his down his shirt) or they arrest you.
The doc did not see the irony with how the illegals are treated and expected to be treated when they trespass here.
