Police Credit ‘Hero’ Bus Driver With Recovery Of 3-Year-Old Kidnapped Milpitas Boy; Suspect Arrested

A three-year-old boy kidnapped from a library in Milpitas Friday was located in Fremont, with the help of a bus driver who police are calling a hero.

The man found with him was arrested and it’s believed the boy was not harmed.

The Milpitas Police Department said the boy was at the library with his mother when he wandered off sometime after 10:30 a.m. Lt. Raj Maharaj said the mother only turned her back for a moment and the boy wandered off.

Witnesses said that the boy was seen being led away by a man in his 20s wearing a hoodie who appeared to be homeless. Other witnesses said the two got on a bus.

Police alerted the VTA and began a search – soon after, they received word from a bus driver who believed the suspect and the boy were on his bus headed to the Fremont BART station. Fremont Police officers were waiting when the bus arrived.

“And as the suspect, holding the child in his arms, walks off the bus the Fremont police takes the suspect into custody and recovers the child,” said Milpitas Police Chief Steve Pangelinan.

The suspect was identified as 23-year-old Alfonso David Edington of Pittsburg.

A police officer had to pry the boy away from Edington during a brief struggled with officers, according to Milpitas Police. The child was reunited with his parents at the Milpitas Police Department, police said.

“The bus driver is a hero. An absolute hero,” said Pangelinan. “And I credit the Valley Transit Authority for receiving information from us and quickly disseminating that to their drivers in the field.”

I read an article awhile back about a mom who put her small child on a leash whenever she went shopping. The leash attached to her belt and the child’s belt.

I thought that was an excellent idea as it provided a little bit of extra safely.

However, evidently no one else liked the idea. The mom was slammed on social media for treating her child like a pet. I guess it’s better to risk a child abduction.

Agree, except he would be given a shovel first. Let him dig it.

I’ve seen child leashes in use in Europe and even in Mexico recently. They’re just soft cords with a cute little figure (such as a monkey or cartoon character) that conceals the chest harness part.

In fact, these harnesses were also used in the United States back in the 1950s and even into the 1960s.

I think they’re a great idea. The child can’t dart out into traffic or do the other unpredictable things small children like to do.

I drive a school bus on the east side of my city, to an RC and several public elementary schools hosting kindergarten to grade six kids. It seems that most of the kids attending these schools are from Africa or the Middle East.

In nice weather, often times mother will walk with a baby in a stroller and a toddler or two running free, near her. The toddlers tend to run free, running into the road and risking injury. In addition, many parents pick their kids up at school, offer parked across the street.

Do they encourage the kids to use the MARKED CROSSWALKS, manned by CROSSING GUARDS? Of course not! Instead, these parents encourage the kids to cross in the middle of the street, and the kids rarely check traffic! Arriving to pick up my ‘kids’, it takes two minutes to go by the school and park. Driving with my ‘kids’ past the school, after school dismissal, takes 10-15 minutes!

It seems to me the attitude amongst many that we import into Canada is, ‘Let’s have eight kids. We get more welfare with eight than three, and if one or two get killed, meh, we’ll just make more!’. When you move to Canada, LEAVE YOUR THE CALLOUS ATTITUDE ABOUT KIDS IN YOUR COUNTRY OF ORIGIN!

One of my children was especially prone to wandering off and no safety belt in a cart could hold her in. I tried the child harness/leash method. The only way that would have worked is if I were willing to drag her through the store. Every time I put it on her she would lay motionless on the floor. It was the only time she was still.

She is now past that phase and we are so thankful that she survived her toddler and preschool years. For awhile I was certain she wouldn’t make it.

Someday (not soon, I hope), the United States will fall apart, much like the Roman Empire did. And then someone will write a history of it. And there will be an entire chapter devoted to how stupid it was for the US to discard the “melting pot” idea.

I’m not Canadian, but I’m guessing that will hold true for Canada as well.

I know someone who worked as a Head Start teacher for over 20 years. A recent challenge is the absolute lack of boundaries in the children of the demographics you mention. Taking them out to the playground is a nightmare for all the staff. The kids just run in all directions-into the street, other properties, etc. The staff does their best to herd them and try to teach them to play on the equipment and stay on the playground. It’s just crazy.

Manners and boundaries indicate a respect for other people and their property.

On my M-F run (as opposed to several once a week early dismissals that I do, also), I have six special needs kids. All have disabilities but only one is physically disabled and he’ll be the only one able to ever earn a living when he grows up. The parents of the Native child are OK, the parents of the Vietnamese kids are great and the mom of the Filipino child is excellent. These kids are always clean, ready to go, and on time when the bus arrives.

The single mothers of the Eritrean and black African kids, my last two morning pick ups and first two afternoon drop offs, NEVER have them ready on time. The black African child often has boogers running down to her bottom lip and sometimes dirty clothes. Guess who has to help the child blow her nose! That mother complains if I am two minutes late, even during a snow storm. Though unemployed, at least 3 times a month, she is not home to meet the child coming from the bus, so I have to take this often disruptive child for an hour long drive to drop the other kids off before bringing the child home. In the three years she has been in Canada, the only thing this single mother has accomplished consistently is popping out two kids, with another one on the way, from yet another ‘baby daddy’. Maybe she thinks that by sending her child to a Roman Catholic school, that will somehow appease God for having so many kids out of wedlock. I don’t know.

After several years involved in a church plant, planted by an African pastor, and this bus run, I hate to admit it, but I am becoming ‘prejudiced’, that is, pre-judging foreigners, especially Africans, based on my experience with many. Unfortunately, many that I’ve met, fit well the stereotype and from what I’ve heard, many young African-Americans are much worse! Why is it that Asians seem so less disruptive and willing to work, rather than looking for a handout?

There are only three weeks left in the school year, so that is good.

The change in demographics here has been rapid. While there are still annual lutefisk dinners and syttende mai celebrations, around 40% of the student body is either Hispanic or Somalian. My 8 year old daughter had a little Somalian girl follow her around in the library and snatch books out of my daughters arms. She also emptied several shelves of books onto the floor. Her father watched her do this to my daughter and didn’t intervene or give her anything but big smiles.

I’ve had women ask me for help finding things in the grocery store with no thank you or even a smile. A Christian culture is a well mannered and polite culture because putting others ahead of ourselves is encouraged. Islamic or pagan culture is the opposite in every way, and a lack of manners or respect for other people’s time, space and property reflects that.

You are viewed as there to serve her at her convenience, she gives no thought to what your actual responsibilities are or how her actions affect you. All cultures are most certainly not equal, and we see it all around us everyday. Sadly, the culture that is being shut out and labeled as dangerous is the one that is rooted in Christianity.
