Microsoft has released ISO disc images of the latest Technical Preview build of Windows 10, but not because they think every tester should install it. Rather, it's because a bug is preventing even some of the more aggressive testers from receiving it through Windows Update.
The release, known as Build 10130, was released to the Windows Insider program's Fast release ring on May 29 - Fast ring testers get the buggiest copy whereas Slow ring signups get cleaner, but later, code. Anyone who configured their Windows 10 box to receive builds before they're thoroughly tested should have received it via Windows Update beginning around then but that hasn't worked for everyone.
"We know that a bunch of Windows Insiders on the Fast ring are currently blocked getting to the latest build due a 0x80146017 error," Gabe Aul, Microsoft's official Windows Insider scoutmaster, said in a Friday blog post. "With the ISOs, they can mount the image and upgrade directly from the ISO and get unblocked."
Aul was quick to point out, however, that this isn't an indication that those on the Slow release ring will want to download and install Build 10130 this way. In fact, Microsoft has decided it might not release this build to the Slow ring at all, because it's still working on fixes for some key bugs in it.
"Once we have these fixes in hand and ready to push out to Windows Update, we'll consider pushing Build 10130 to the Slow ring," Aul said.

Same here I have that little Windows icon to download 10, but I will wait until I get reviews or something. Will it be worth it? I do like Windows 7. I hate Windows 8.1..ugh
Excellent analogy, since answers to Windows questions typically have multi-faceted answers. Take your "baby" question. Suppose you have the choice of pointing the 11-yr-old at either a) a page with a paragraph or two on birth and reproduction, or b) any ONE of the following short answers, all of which are correct but incomplete:
Very few Windows questions have simple answers; most are about as complex as "Where do babies come from?"
I suppose one might assume that most Windows users function at the level of the 6-yr-old, though I find that assumption a bit patronizing to the users. I could be wrong... I was wrong once before, back in '58, when I was but 6... ;-)
"An error of type 0x80146017 occurred" satisfies virtually no one's needs.
It's not like microsoft isn't noted for bloatware, I've maintained for years that windows is what you get when you pay programers based on the shear number of lines of code written.
They could convert the worse-than-useless dialog boxes to something that provides the average user with a sense of what happened and allows the more advanced user the chance to click on the concise error descriptor for a more in depth treatment of the subject.
the task bar icon is an alert to get you to reserve a copy of RC W10. It will not install anything. It will schedule about a 3gb download for installation after July 29. in any case, figure out your backup strategy cuze you want a full back up of everything off of your system.
W10 is free if you have 7 or 8. The interface has the best of both 7 and 8 and is more keyboard/mouse friendly then 8.
I have expensive to replace software that may not work properly.
if you have the update icon click it, before you upgrade your system will be checked for incompatibilities both hard and soft. One unfortunate, but logical consequence of W10’s white list is more software will be blocked that otherwise would be fine, until its oked by MS, even if the build is specifically done to solve an issue with W10.
I don't want them.
