The sheer size and wildness of Yellowstone National Park's signature bison provide a magnificent subject for camera-toting tourists.
But officials caution visitors not to come within 25 yards of the animals, noting that they are unpredictable and able to sprint three times faster than people can run.
A 62-year-old Australian man who ventured to within 3 to 5 feet of one bison was seriously injured Tuesday when the animal charged and tossed him into the air several times, park officials said in a statement.
This is the second such incident within weeks.
A 16-year-old Taiwanese exchange student was gored by a bison on May 15 while posing for a photo.
Both encounters occurred in the popular Old Faithful portion of Yellowstone.

BAN BISON!!!
Bison viewer lives matter.
Bison selfie?
If it were a trans-bison, it would be better protected.
I have witnessed a couple of Asian tourists with a kid heading straight toward a bison, camera in hand. To my left was a park ranger in full sprint trying to head them off. The boy could move.
Isn’t there metadata to prevent this type of encounter?
We tent camped at Yellowstone Park in 1964 and a ranger told us about a couple that tried to place their toddler on a bear’s back for a photo. Thankfully the bear took off.
I’m pretty sure there are dangerous animals in Australia and in Taiwan-didn’t these tourists realize we have them here, too? It reminds me of that commercial for State Farm with the bison attacking the car...
Two words: telephoto lens.
People don’t realize that they are not safe anywhere near bison. Bison are huge. They can easily flip a car or small truck. They are fast and can turn quickly. I have been near them in the bad lands. One minute they are near you and the next they are half a mile away.
The ranger who’s wife ran a B and B on their ranch told us that tourists are injured all the time. And that ranchers who switched from cows to American buffalo were in for a shock when their truck was flipped or their horse was killed. Raising bison is a dangerous business. And while these huge herbivores don’t mean to pick fights, most people have no idea when they are scaring one of these 8 foot tall, three thousand pound animals.
I was there in the 80’s, they claimed a tourist did put their kid on a bison and the kid got tossed a hundred feet. I wonder.
Then again I can show you my photo of a moose’s antler and eyeball as he charged right past be because I just had to have that photo.
Bison ain't cows....
They had a camera, so the bison should have known they were friendly.
They can clear a fence easily, too.
Sounds like they need to close that “Bison Encounter” ride...
Darwin will not be denied.
They stink to high heaven but are the meanest thing on four legs.
There’s a place called Needmore Buffalo farm in Indiana where you can get quite an education on raising them. Another thing people don’t know is they have a “soft side.”
Yep...their hair is not scratchy or stiff like cattle, it is very, very soft and can be spun into a fine yarn.
But of course shearing them isn’t practical or safe, so you can go to the farm and collect the fur off of the barbed wire fencing in spring/summer when they shed their winter “wool” in great clumps.
