More Americans clinically obese than ever - Mississippi named fattest state for second year running

More Americans are clinically obese than ever, a new study has revealed.

Nearly a staggering 28 per cent of residents are now categorized as obese - making up an increasing proportion of the two-thirds of Americans who are overweight, the Gallup-Healthways poll shows.

This means they are at a higher risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, dementia, deep vein thrombosis, certain cancers, and a number of other medical conditions.

It comes as Mississippi has taken the crown for the fattest U.S. state for the second year running, with a whopping 35.2 per cent of residents obese (down from 35.4 per cent the previous year).

Other states with 'consistently high obesity rates' are West Virginia, Louisiana, Arkansas and Kentucky - all of which have ranked among the most obese 10 states every year since 2008.

In contrast, Hawaii was found to be the only place to have fewer than one in five residents who are obese, making it the slimmest American state, followed by Colorado, according to the new poll.

They both beat Montana, which was formerly the least obese state with a rate of just 19.6 per cent. Other states found to have 'low obesity rates' were California, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

The gerrymandered district of Congressman Bennie Thompson accounts for much of the health and financial distress of the state of Mississippi.

While in my view and from what I have seen there is a massive population who are obese, however the black population certainly has a big problem.

Women, well girls about 18 to younger seem to not care about what they look like today. They wear short tight dresses here with spare tires around their was it and cellulite on their thighs for all to see and it is disgusting.

Yep. Lots of muffin tops out there. I wonder if these people watch what they eat, ever go for a walk, etc. These younger heavy people will have a lifetime of difficulties due to this.

What about West Virginia?

Well maybe we Americans are too fat. But it seems to me someone has been defining obesity down (or is it up?). My husband did one of those health screenings at the gym and he was technically “obese 1.” Let me tell you that he was NOT obese and even the personal trainer was embarrassed by the outcome and dismissed it. Of course I teased him endlessly about it.

Obese-1-kanobi

Another BS poll - they ask the subjects to report their own height and weight. From the study linked in the article:

"Survey respondents self-report their height and weight, which is used to calculate Body Mass Index (BMI)."

Here's a report on how well that works - http://blog.al.com/spotnews/2013/04/people_in_the_south_are_not_so.html

By comparing the BRFSS self-reported weight data with the REGARDS scale-weight data, researchers found that most everyone fudges, or underreports, their weight when asked on a telephone.

Turns out that Southerners fudge less, he said.

The study analyzed the weights in the nine geographic regions used by the U.S. Census Bureau.

It found that the West North Central region, which includes Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and North and South Dakota, ranked fourth in obesity by the telephone survey results. But when actually weighed in the REGARDS study, people from that region ranked first in the nation for obesity.

In the telephone survey results, the East South Central region, which includes Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Kentucky, ranked highest. But when weighed, that southern region ranked fifth.

"It is hard to know exactly what is going on, but my speculation is that people in the South are telling the truth more," Howard said. "Perhaps there is not as much stigma connected to obesity as say someone in California, or in this case, Minnesota."

Looking at the numbers shows the wide discrepancy between what people say on the telephone and the physical evidence of actually getting weighed. When weighed in the REGARDS study, all of the regions' obesity's numbers went up -- it's just that the southern region numbers went up less.

"Everybody underreports their weight but women do it more," Howard said.

Men, on the other hand, do something else that affects the Body Mass Index, which is weight divided by height squared and is used to define obesity.

"They overreport their height, which makes them seem less obese."

" What about West Virginia?"

There is a rumor going around that WV is going to change it's state motto from "Mountaineers Are Always Free" to "Thank God for Mississippi!".

This is obviously a racist study meant to further marginalize black folks who are victims of BigFood Inc. BigFood, Inc. is targeting the Black population with high calorie low nutrition foods, as a method of controlling and reducing the Black population.

I am sure there is a conspiracy between both BigFood, Inc and BigAbort, Inc. If they can't control the Black population before birth, they are attempting to poison and disable them as adults.

Racism is everywhere. Don't be a denier!

I’m from Memphis, Tennessee, but I live just south of the state line in the most conservative county in Mississippi. While the U.S. as a whole is 13% black, Mississippi is roughly 37% black, which explains many of the issues this state has. We have entire counties that are over 90% black.

Good to hear that the folks in Hawaii are keeping the weight down. We wouldn’t want them to sink into the ocean.

We’re all a lot fatter than we were 50-70 years ago, but we also live 20-30 years longer.

I think this fat thing is not such a big deal as they want you to believe.

This study should be coupled with the study that found that people that are overweight live longer than those that are “normal” weight or skinny.
