To thwart a bear attack, make yourself look bigger and scarier.
This is how you escape from a bear attack.
Ralph Perrson was walking with his wife and dog in the woods when he noticed his dog was barking differently, the Swedish outlet The Local reported. Suddenly a large Eurasian brown bear ran out of the woods and charged at him.
Fortunately for Perrson, he knew bears are much more scared of us than we are of them. Standing his ground, he raised his arms and let out a primal yell. The very startled bear spun right around and ran back into the woods.

Like black bears in the US, Eurasian brown bears avoid humans and rarely attack unless provoked or startled, which this one probably was. There have only been two fatal attacks in Sweden in the past century.

Never try that with a Grizzly. They will call your bluff every time.

I suppose yelling like that might work. But I have a more effective way of surviving a bear attack.
Just run faster than your wife.
Yeah.
It’s darn deceiving that a beast as dangerous as a bear looks so cute and cuddly.
How about 3 bears? You’re right. When your hungry, you’re just a walking porterhouse steak to them, regardless of your stance. Most people will be scared anyways and start screaming.
One shot from a .45 has the exact same result. And if the bear is rabid and should he/she continue to charge, well, you get the idea.
There is the significant risk of survivorship bias in the article’s headline. It’s only the right way for the survivors. It wouldn’t seem to be the right way if 999 out of 1000 people who tried it got eaten, but you won’t see youtube videos of those people, you will only see this one. I don’t know the actual statistics, but I wouldn’t take the headline as necessarily sage and safe advice for all bear encounters.
‘fraid so. It might work with a 200# brown or black bear. With a grizzly, a can of pepper spray and/or a .45 is more effective.
I have a better way. Don’t provoke the bear by following it and taking video with your iPhone. This may have worked this time, but what about the next provoker/videographer?
If you happen to be a liberal, you can always stop a grizzly attack by rubbing them softly between the ears.
Well, that's what I tell my liberal friends, anyway.
Nobody knows it but the bear was French.
To thwart a bear attack, make yourself look bigger and scarier, then shoot it...
This was a hoax, the bear is his pet. :)
Yes - though to be honest, every "real-life" method of surviving an attack will suffer from that bias.
I venture to say that the method works - until it doesn't work.
Regards,
You can tell if Grizzlys are in the area because the bear poop smells like pepper spray and will have belt buckles and shoe lace eyes in it.
Whew... THAT’s a relief .... And here I thought it was going to be another “Post a neon sign with a gay sailor on it”, like the article from the other day, about keeping Russian submarines out of Swedish waters...

This only works if the bear is not that hungry (any predator will not risk getting injured over a minor snack) or if the bear is NOT protecting it’s young or has it’s back against the wall.
If you are in an area and the bear comes up to you, chances are a curious bear will run away if you seem intimidating, however, if you are encroaching into the bear’s territory and the bear has cubs nearby i think the only options are to kill the bear or run like hell.
Outfitters in grizzly bear country know the difference. Most of us do not.
Someone is going to be bear poop one day. Leave the bears alone.
