Pitch Perfect 2 stopped the show at the box office this weekend, grossing an estimated $70.3 million in first place.
That debut is about $5 million more than the entire domestic gross of the original film, and more than double the sequels $29 million budget.
Heading into the weekend, analysts expected the sequel to premiere in the $40 million range. But not much about the Pitch Perfect franchise has made sense by traditional Hollywood rules. The original film, an acerbic comedy set in the low-stakes world of collegiate a capella singing, opened in September 2012hardly a time of year known for major features.

I’ll be damned...this flick has turned ‘no fat chicks’ over on its head...go figure.
All the fat chicks dragged their boyfriends to go see it. That’s a HUGE market.
In the one word sayings of jojo biden, one word, “Green Bay Packers Cameo”. Just sayin’. :>}
Everybody knew it was going to beat out Mad Max. R rated movies from 40 year old franchises don’t beat PG-13 rated movies from 3 year old franchises. Though MM is a better movie, with probably a lot less of that supposed feminism. It’s not a license to print money.
Fury Road is getting the best word of mouth of any film in recent memory. It’s going to have a long run and it will make a lot of money.
PP2 was hilarious. Saw it Thursday night. Very good follow-up to the first one. Will see Mad Max this week.
The sequel must include "Fat Amy" in the cast.
99% at Rotten. I’ve never seen an action movie score above 85, there’s a big chunk of critics who just don’t like them. But man it’s a fun movie.
Honestly, just got back from seeing it. Absolutely hilarious. The non sequiturs are just over the top. Great movie for all ages.
I just requested “Pitch Perfect” from Netflix. It sounds amusing.
I’d see it, but having missed out on the original Pitch Perfect, I wouldn’t comprehend the plot.
“Mad Max Fury Road” didn’t do so hot because it went feminist. I liked the first movies, especially Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome. Here’s where “Mad Max” failed.
* Heroine who is as tough if not tougher than Max, has more screen time, and WAY more personality; Max’s only distinguishing trait aside from the sheer action is clear mental illness. It reminds me of the modern sitcoms where if Dad isn’t missing, he’s lovable but clueless or inept.
* Max has an idea to save the girls, but their true saviors are the old feminists who come in during the second act and mostly die saving the young breeders.
* The ending is ultra-modern, egalitarian and, while it gives hope for civilization, not quite a fit IMO with the rest of the movies.
* Heavy handed stereotypical characterizations like the fat evil accountant down to swollen feet, a blinded justice who kills randomly to try to get back property as is right with the patriarchal overlord, all the women are sex toys or barefoot and pregnant except for Imperator Furiosa.
* Lots of homage to comic book movies like “The Watchmen” with scenes shaped to look like cool 3D moments lifted from comic books that did little to improve the actual story.
Agreed. I saw it and LOVED it. Talk about over the top! I thought I’d be the one old dude sitting in the back but there were a lot of old dudes and old dude spouses there with me.
‘________there were a lot of old dudes and old dudes spouses there with me.’
Meanwhile, my daughter reluctantly allowed her mid-teenager to see the movie - as ‘all her friends were going.’ Daughter could have forbidden her daughter, but prefers her daughter not to become sneaky, or whatever.
Our granddaughter’s family prefers not to help finance movies like that, by buying tickets and attending, and are ‘protecting’ their daughters from junk for as long as possible.
Meanwhile, their attitude comes from a/the Christian perspective.
Even so, this family performs locally, and does some commercials. So the kids have a good background in musicals and dramas for all ages, and are learning what is junk.
I’ve heard from sources I trust that it’s an action masterpiece. I haven’t been to a movie theater in 17 years, and I’m seeing it this week.
Basically somebody explained to Miller that the best 20 minutes of Mad Max history was the end of Road Warrior, so they did that for 2 hours. And it just keeps amping up and up and up. With just enough pauses to put together just enough plot to have an excuse for the next leg.
It really really is. Hope you like it. I LOVED it.
It’s currently ranked at #23 on the IMDB Top 250 list.
