A substitute teacher at an elementary school in Phoenix is under investigation and facing possible assault charges after slamming a student to the ground after calling him a nigger.
The entire affair at Bernard Black Elementary was caught on students cell-phone cameras, and that footage was later acquired by a local Fox news station: (At site)
In the video, the teacher, Brett Russell, is seen resisting an eighth-grade student who appears to be pushing up against him, before abruptly grabbing the boy and throwing him to the ground, hard. Its unclear what started the altercation or why Russell used such sudden force, although the boy has apparently already admitted to calling him a nigger during the confrontation.
The boys mother says she wants the teacher sent to prison.
I dont care what words come out of a childs mouth, no one should ever put their hands on a child like that, she told Fox 10. I want to press charges against him. I want him arrested.
You do everything to protect your kids, and you dont send them to school thinking they are going to get hurt, she said. Thank God my son was okay. He could have hit his head, he could have gotten a concussion.
Thus far, however, the police are still investigating the matter, and the Roosevelt School District has refused to comment on whether Russell will remain employed by them.
Watched the video and I back the teacher. The kid was assaulting the teacher, the teacher controlled him and rolled him to the ground. The sue-happy mama is raising her son to be a thug.
Exactly! That was just a soft push down.
The mother’s being absolutely ridiculous!
Sounds like the kid had it coming to him.
Pushing a kid on the floor is hardly a “body slam” Like others have said the kid pushed up against the teacher and apparently called him a “n” word.
Didn’t look like ‘body slamming’ to me. The kid rolled over and then stood up.
When did the “floor” become the “ground”?
Mama Fuentes, why wasn't Miguel in his seat, studying? Reading? Doing school work?
Your little snowflake and YOU are to blame. We all understand how Hispanics hate blacks.....maybe innocent little Miguel has learned a lesson. Next time it'll be a body bag.
This unfortunate sub, probably earned $50/diem for his trouble. It seems that if the sub wanted to really body-slam that little thug, he could have. He showed great restraint. The sub will have no one standing up for him, supporting him. School records of the thug are sealed and private....we won't ever learn his MO at the school.
Another problem is that this is an elementary school. So what is an 8th grader doing in a elem school?
Mother - F-
Thug - F-
Sub - B+
FWIW, this is how to do a body slam

If I used the word *thug*, I really meant *bloke*.
The kid......more specifically was being verbally abusive to the teacher.. What the teacher did in response was physical and could draw a response from the school authorities. He could lose his certificate. While the kids verbal abuse was certainly out of line and wrong, the teacher's physical reaction was even more wrong, and will likely be litigated..or punished in some way..
Watched the video. Good grief, my husband plays with our boys almost that roughly, and they love it. (They are in karate and are kind of rough little cobs though!) If the kid called the teacher that word, and was also being physically aggressive toward the teacher (which you can see he is), I think the teacher did fine. Maybe, as others have observed, it will save the kid much greater harm in the future.
The kid asked for exactly what he got.
It is clear you didn’t watch the video.
HA!!!!
In some places, “Elementary School” means Grades K-8.
Yeah. He should just let the little shit push him all over the classroom while drooling on his chest and sending out the occasional epithet. That’ll teach all those students respect for teachers! I mean get real, I got hit harder than that by my Art teacher.
There was no “slam”. The teacher pushed the kid off and down. If he wanted to pick the kid up and slam him he could have. He didn’t.
I wasn’t aware of other districts/states doing that.
I do know, for the past decade, middle schools in Hartford,CT were so out of control, that they were closed; Harford cops were getting 100s of 911 calls to MSs to break up fights; students of grades 7,8,9 were sent to elem schools, where populations had dropped, and desks were available.
These teens were thrust into schools, with all their expected teenage angst, with no special programs, as they had in MS. No intermural sports, no band. No music. No drama. No clubs of any kind. No home ec. No shop.
Every *hook* that keeps a teen wanting to stay in school, were taken away. The elem schools are now hell holes. Run by the thugs. The *little* elem kids are fearful of the Thugs they encounter in the school. The parents, have no clue as to what is going on in their elem school.
#1: The student was clearly touching the teacher without the teacher’s permission to do so. Ergo the student had committed a battery upon the person of the teacher.
The teacher was simply putting the student into a position whereby the student could no longer continue to commit battery upon the teacher.
Totally legal.
#2: Had a teacher of that size and size differential “body slammed” the perp, the student would have not been able to get back up so quickly.... or perhaps get up ever!
The student provoked the teacher. So it’s ok.
Did you notice the size difference....the age....
If this had happened in any place public or not, with two adults, one of them would have the right to file charges...There would have been only one legal violation, the physical assault on another person...But in this case it's a child...
Name calling is not illegal, especially when done by a child.. With a adult, at best it my be considered taunting..
Guess which one would be prosecuted..???
But they were not both adults...One was a child, one had a position of responsibility and training to deal with these sorts of issues.
He had absolutely no right to get physical with the kid...in any way...period..
He had a number of rational options to include taking the kid to principles office. But he did not....
He responded with physical force. it matters not if he hurt the kid or not in terms of a violation, only the degree of it.. Since there is video evidence of improper contact and if the matter is not settled privately, it will likely become a problem for the school, or the school board.
One wonders what might have happened if the kid had been a “cracker”, as opposed to a “beaner”.
Looks like he ‘slams’ a fist or forearm into the side of the kid’s head to me. Before the kid goes down.
If I was on the jury he wouldn’t have a chance -IF this video were the only evidence.
Good to see you around BTW.
