Glen Campbell Doesn’t Realize He’s Never Going Home Again
New York Post ^ | 5/1 | Andrea Peyser

With his “aw shucks, ma’am” charm and velvety voice, Glen Campbell was a legendary country and pop-music singer, guitarist and Hollywood hot guy. But now, friends and relatives tell me, he languishes in a “mediocre” facility outside Nashville, Tenn., for patients afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease.

He can spend only minimal time with his oldest children, say sources, who claim he is frequently alone except for the company of caregivers and TV crews recording his mental decline.

He wants to go home, they say, and doesn’t understand that the facility is his residence, probably for the rest of his life.

As to your tagline, mind if I fill it in for today?

"Class"

Thanks for that. When my mother died my dad never got a stone for her grave and took to the bottle. Me and my brothers ended up in a series of foster homes in AZ. But that's another story. You have to play the hand you're dealt.

I agree with you and I honor you and your family for your devotion.

My mother suffered a catastrophic stroke. I’ve never seen anyone so sick. I didn’t know what to do. I’m not going to lie and say I took her home, because I didn’t. She had tubes down her throat, and a stomach tube for feeding. I just couldn’t tend to those. She went from the hospital to a nursing home, but she was only there for six days.

I may have been a coward, and I do live with regrets.

It’s tough losing you parent/mom no matter what. I lost my mother in 2013 from inflammatory breast cancer (IBC). Be it terminal cancer or Alzheimers, it is painful to just stand by and know you cannot do a thing. I’m still hurting quite a bit. My heart goes out to you and anyone else who is going through things like this. I’m still trying to deal with my loss, iti s so hard.

Wow. Sorry to hear that brother.

A nurse told me “it gets easier”.

I still don’t know what she meant. ...other than the space between grieving grows.

God Bless,
Joe

I have to concede to you for that position; I’m not even close to your level.

Agree.

I lost a good friend who took a job managing a traveling carnival show. He was about 35 when he took the job, and he never made it to 40. Long time ago.

Yeah, it is very tough. I was very close to my mother. I feared losing her more than I feared an atomic war. Yeah, maybe over time, it dies get easier but you'll feel the loss forever. Even my gradeschool buddy, he lost his Mom in 2009, came home from work to find her gone, it still hits him from time to time.

Whatever state of mind Glen is in, I wish him the very best in his remaining time. He may have made some bad choices but haven’t we all at one time or another. He has always been one of my favorite entertainers. His music got me thru a lot of bad times. May the Good Lord bless his final days on this earth!

I had just gone in the Navy when “Galveston” was a hit for Glen! I was homesick and being from Texas, and this song being about war was one of my all time favorites!

Six days is not enough time and I said at the end about exceptions

Money

Space

Time

Intensive care

Incontinence.....this is really the big one to be honest....cleaning poop from an invalid is real life

Some folks can’t do it

Some people are spooked by someone croaking in their home

Etc

Long term total invalid care for someone who doesn’t remember who you are is a tough call

I’ve never faced that one.....I would probably cop out

I think my beef is about warehousing viable older relatives

Or on very personal note...my mother refused to let my dad die at home....about two months care...astrocytoma...she had POA......he had really given her a helluva life...but she didn’t want people in the home 24/7 and the spooky part us....it’s tough.....u can’t run from it in the house

Fast forward 12 years and she died at home in bed...cared for 24/7 by old school southern black matrons with her little ringy bell and hospice....and me

You ever watch Southern Charm on Bravo....Patricia Altschul......that’s my mother sans the Birken bags....she was tight....

I’m very duty oriented....it’s genetic

But it can be lonely at the top....
