Because inviting total strangers to inhabit your home while you are away is such a great idea.

Does Airbnb screen users?

Airbnb does not routinely perform background checks on its users, although we reserve the right to do so. Instead, we strive to provide our hosts and guests with the right tools to make informed decisions regarding who they interact with on the site and in the real world.

Airbnb offers a number of features that help build trust and cultivate a transparent community marketplace, including our secure messaging system, user reviews, the Host Guarantee, and Verified ID. At Airbnb, we want to build the world's most trusted community. To help ensure our members' safety, we dedicate a knowledgeable and experienced team to monitor any suspicious activity in our marketplace. Users can also help ensure the safety of the community by flagging activity they feel is suspicious or inappropriate. We investigate each flag on a case-by-case basis and follow up as appropriate. In any user profile, listing, or message thread, you will see an icon with a small flag which allows you to notify our team who can investigate. Here’s an example of what the flag looks like:

Their background checks are as good as Uber.

But fear not: They'll be 'flagged' for their evil deed.../s

Airbnb is an awesome way to fill a vacation rental , but the idea of renting out ones own home seems ludicrous. The exceptions might be if you live near the the Masters the super bowl or another major event when you can make huge money.

The renters will SO not get their security deposit back.

I own lots of rental property and this sort of thing sometimes happens. The damage is fairly minimal and superficial and could be cleaned up fairly cheaply (their estimate is outrageous, the whole home could practically be rebuilt out from the studs for less)

The carpet and furniture could be professionally cleaned for less than a grand. And the whole house cleaned to like new condition for a few hundred tops. Add another $20 for a new horsey toy and $30 for a new walmart rug.

The damage was more psychological honestly.

One more thing:

Just like the Uber Terms of Use, no one likely bothered to read the AirBnB TOU.

Apps are a dangerous new development for the general public, new & old, because it’s not just about clicking to install software or a game anymore: Not reading the TOU can have real life consequences because that click is legally binding, in many cases severely limiting legal recourse in the event something really bad happens...and I think we have yet to see the worst events transpire.

It’s Canada. The homeowners should have called SRU Team One to flush the b@$t@rds out of the house.

DANG!

As our Western countries become even more secular and continue to lose their traditional morality, this crap will only become more prevalent.

some people think they’re so much smarter than us plebes...

hey! we’re gonna be gone for a while, we can pick up extra cash by renting out the house whilst we’re gone? what can possibly go wrong?

or

hey! we’re gonna have some civil unrest, so let’s advertise that we have places for those who wish to destroy things...we’re so smart! what can possibly go wrong?
