Living historian Curt Fields describes the life and accomplishments of Ulysses S. Grant. This video is part of the Civil War Trust's In4 video series, which presents short videos on basic Civil War topics.
The Civil War in Four Minutes: Ulysses S. Grant
He always looks larger in the photographs, some of them... maybe the beard made him look more substantial...
“The Way” was an amazing film and had me in tears at the end.
I will do that trail in just a few years.
“Dedicated to the American soldier and sailor,” in his own hand.
Thanks for the links. Greatly appreciated.
I feel kinda stupid, having spent an extensive amount of time in Manhattan and not visiting his mausoleum.
It will be on my list of non-negotiables next time.
It helped that Duvall is related to Lee. ;-)
That’s good to know :)
It's not that short. I got a set of books as a gift that included his and Longstreet's memoirs. Both fascinating reads.
It’s very surreal. Because it is out of the way, on 122nd and Riverside all the way uptown near the Hudson river, not many tourists visit it especially during the week. So you could very well be alone walking into this giant memorial and there’s just one security guard sitting inside at a desk. It’s the closest I ever got to a Civil war general not to mention a US President. NYC is also where Gen. William T. Sherman died on 71nd street. I read Sherman use to call the rebels “Democrats” LOL!
Part of it is myth, but I frankly love the image of Grant in a muddy private’s coat, chewing on a well-used cigar stub. Especially as compared to the dandified, gold bedecked “cavaliers” like Pickett and Custer.
Grant’s campaign to capture Vicksburg is probably the most brilliant field campaign in US history.
No one is buried in Grant's tomb.
... autobiography as he was dying of throat cancer ...
A clipping with a photo of General Grant, titled:
General Grant Worked on His Memoirs Even When Fatal Illness Overtook Him.
If you’re ever in California do see the Reagan Library.
I had so much fun in that place but, when I got to his grave I broke down in tears and took in the glorious views as well.
Many of them on both sides were very honorable.
During that period, I can’t think of a more honorable man than Robert E Lee.
I can’t think of a more honorable man than George Washington in all of our history.
Wow what an incredible show this grant series is oh my gosh it’s incredible The Wall Street Journal was right fantastic series
