Adam Smith admits he probably could have picked a better way to communicate his convictions. In fact, the one-time corporate honcho now wishes he had.
The former CFO of medical manufacturer Vante filmed himself berating a Chick-Fil-A server for the company's notorious stance on gay rights, then lost his $200,000-a-year job after he posted the video online and it went viral.
Now, Smith and his family are living in an RV, scraping by on food stamps.
In his new e-book, "A Million Dollar Cup of Water," the 37-year-old details his experiences since that fateful day he decided to make his point, perhaps naively unaware of the consequences he'd face in spreading his rant over the Internet.
He doesn't regret the stance he took, but he revealed he is sorry about the way he spoke to that fast food worker.
Smith's downfall made headlines in 2012 after he pulled up to a drive-thru in Tuscon, Ariz., to get a free cup of water, ABC News reported.
He proceeded to spew a volley of abuse at the young worker about her company's stated commitment to "traditional marriage." He filmed himself saying that "Chick-Fil-A is a hateful corporation" and told the server he didn't "know how you live with yourself and work here."
He then uploaded the video.
Smith returned to work at the medical manufacturer Vante to find that the clip had gone viral.
"The voicemail is completely full, and it's full of bomb threats," his receptionist reportedly told him.
Smith was fired and lost his handsome salary, plus $1 million in stock options.
He moved with his wife Amy and four children to Portland, Ore., where he was appointed CFO for another company.
But he lost the role just two weeks later after bosses realized who he was. Since then, he has struggled to find a lasting gig.
Businesses have been too wary of the potential fallout to hire Smith, he said.
"I think people are scared that it could happen again," he told ABC.
His e-book is not faring so well on the digital charts, however.
"Regarding the many 1-star ratings my book has received today and yesterday, I would like to note that I have only sold 17 digital copies thus far, yet there are 23 1-star ratings on my book. This fascinates me! LOL!" he told ABC.
Why would that fascinate him?
Isn't he familiar with the De'Rats mantra: "Vote early, vote often" ?
Me, too. If he had any decency whatsoever he would give his children to a family with common sense, and let them raise them.
exactly.
I have zero sympathy for him. he went out and belittled a woman who is working to pay her bills and put food on the table while trying to make himself a martyr for the cause .
It backfired and he deserved what he got..
They are very lucky they made it past the third trimester.
I love going to Chick-Fil-A. Better than your run-of-the-mill fast food place in terms of quality and service. Same goes for In-N-Out.
Social Justice Warriors, SJW’s, are hard at work suppressing freedom and liberty everywhere
Except that he’s using them as an excuse to get welfare money, so he wouldn’t.
He should apply at Chick Fil a.
Clearly, you are wearing the wrong name.
Clearly, you are not CFO (or any type of management) material.
Clearly, you should stop sucking up the taxpayer's dollars via food stamps.
Clearly, you should apply at the Chick-Fila location where you berated the drive-thru worker with your "panties-in-a-wad" tantrum.
Clearly, you should study that drive-thru worker's demeanor and actions during your tantrum, and request that, if hired, you would like to have her supervise you, so that you can learn how to act like an adult, and to treat others as such.
Clearly, I have no sympathy for you (I do feel sad for your kids' future though).
Good.
They are and they seem to not grasp the fact social justice and Constitutional or God given rights are not the same as their social justice rights. .
Social Justice is not about justice
I am only surprised that MSNBC did not hire him to host a show.
His “stance” against Chick-Fil-A did not cost him anything.
What cost him was being an obnoxious, self-righteous asshole who (a) verbally abused a poor girl who was only trying to work for a living and (b) proudly posted proof on youtube.
Good! The man got what he deserved.
I’ll never forget those long lines that formed at the restaurant when this happened.
To quote the liberals: “Karma is a bitch!”
Indeed.
What kind of dbag goes through a drivethru for a cup of anyways? If you’re going to berate a minimum age worker for something way above their paygrade, then at least have the decency to buy something.
Don’t you know this man is better than the rest of us? He was acting with great benevolence by going around and spreading his wisdom to the great unwashed.
