Are smartwatches dangerous? Lawyer wants $1 billion campaign to warn drivers

An attorney is seeking a court order that four tech giants fund a $1-billion smartwatch warning campaign After the Apple Watch ships to initial customers Friday, thousands of motorists might be sneaking a glance at the smartwatch to read text messages and other alerts.

That has at least one person concerned. On Monday, an attorney filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court against Apple, Samsung, Microsoft and Google that seeks a court order for the technology companies to fund a $1-billion public education campaign about the dangers of using a smartwatch while driving. In his lawsuit, Stephen Joseph says smartwatches represent a bigger distraction for drivers than smartphones because the vibrations and the sounds from the wrist-worn device will be tougher to ignore.

"The temptation to check the tiny screen immediately after receiving a notification is virtually irresistible," the suit says, adding that looking at the watch means "the road becomes invisible to the driver."

Then why not just voice control the damned phone and be done with it?

You can. . . or you can have CarPlay installed in your car. . . but that doesn't do the same things as the Apple Watch.

What does the Apple Watch do that a phone doesn't that you need to pay attention to while you're driving?

Are there people so deluded that they think drivers should never blink or ever look away from the road directly ahead?

The current thinking is that these distractions are an integral part of the process of driving. However texting or watching a video is a distraction that is not justified.

And lawyers wonder why they are despised by nearly everyone.

Didn’t Big Bang Theory do an episode where Raj met the real Siri voice girl?

Lawyers should come with warning labels.

Like the ones on cigarettes or booze. That's worked really well./s

I have no idea. I don't watch sitcoms.

It's for the children you see...

I've never worn a watch so it is useless to me but I bet a lot of people start wearing watches and this might be a problem because you know people will use it to read text messages but it's not the companies' fault.

Your graphic is great. . . I started wearing watches again earlier than that because I got tired of digging my iPhone out of my pocket and dropping pens and other things in my pocket out. It became a pain. I look on the Apple Watch as a cure for that. . . and to relieve even more digging. . .

My husband just got one for work, and he likes it.

He thinks it’s easier to use the nav through watch than his phone.

He likes it much better than he thought he would.

Wait until a lawyer ... after seeing this ... gets the idea of suing Rolex because of how dangerous it is to look at what time it is, and drive! ... LOL ...

With smartwatches the answer to that is simple. A great many smartwatches users prefer large phablets that are kept in a brief case, purse, or cargo pocket when not in use.

These phones are pretty much full computer when combined with a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard.

Because passengers never use phones.

No matter how idiotic an idea is, there are always people stupid enough to implement it.

And these smartwatches tether to and control the phablets?

I don't remember Dick Tracy having a single accident because of his wrist radio, leave it to Apple to make it dangerous.

Smile fanboys, it's a joke!

It’s not aN apple smartwatch. I think it’s LG. His company is doing work on smart watches so his boss gave him one to use.

Does he use it for anything other than a NAV display while he's driving?
