Since the end of the recession in June 2009, the number of job openings in the private sector has steadily climbed just as one would expect to happen as the economy recovered.
But over those same years, the share of 25- to 54-year-olds who are active in the labor market has steadily fallen...

“For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.”
2 Thessalonians 3 (King James version)
Would you object to a public service requirement (in keeping with your ability, of course) being a condition of your receiving the assistance?
Just read #38, so you’ve answered my question. You would be willing, but probably not able.
A lot of people are making that same decision. In the secretarial/admin. assistant field, technology has made the live helper unnecessary for younger tech-savvy workers. I don’t know much about legal secretaries.
In my area many jobs that involve dealing with customers/the public won’t hire you if you don’t speak Spanish or Portuguese in addition to English. It is a national disgrace; the employers are simply reacting to the de facto amnesty (fewer American customers, and masses of illegal Hispanics and Brazilians).
They just want to bang on the drum all day.
1. because they are druggies
2. because they have learned that if they don’t come to work everyday on time they get fired
3. they have tattoos that are objectionable if they are in public view
4. they are attitudinal and black

It’s true at law firms, at least around my area. My friend, who worked me at my last employer, was let go in January. It had been coming for some time. The employer no longer has secretaries assigned to 2 or 3 attorneys. It has what amounts to a steno pool or word processing department. The attorneys just don’t need that kind of dedicated attention anymore.
Fortunately, for my friend, she is very tech savvy. She managed to secure an IT job. I’m not that sophisticated. I can turn on a computer and type. That’s about it. :)
Tearing down homes for cash is a big one around here then they rehab the wood into useable needed items to sell for cash.
You know how to turn on the computer? Boy, you're a whiz. I type like crazy, but nothing ever shows up on the screen because my wife hasn't turned it on for me.
Vast number of mid-level office jobs that survived even the huge downsizings of the mid-80's have nonetheless been eliminated since 2005.
By Google.
There is simply no need to pay someone 70K+ a year to "know stuff", when a three second Google search can provide a more accurate and in-depth answer.
LOL
I guess that’s why you married her, right? :)
Now if I can just figure out where there carriage return is on this &#^!% keyboard. I keep having to type one long sentence because there's no *#&^&@^! return.
I simply sit back and laugh when I get the email saying they found a better fit. Better fit = you are a 50+ year old white man, and you dont fit our diversity needs.
I know exactly what you mean.
I’ve always thought that given both the number and basic character of Freepers that are looking for work, we could come together and create a very successful business.
There is a wide variety of skill sets and availability that seem to be looking for a home.
Who knows, something might turn up.
