Apple today released OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 which includes the new Photos app and improves the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac.

With Photos you can:
• Browse your photos by time and location in Moments, Collections, and Years views
• Navigate your library using convenient Photos, Shared, Albums, and Projects tabs
• Store all of your photos and videos in iCloud Photo Library in their original format and in full resolution
• Access your photos and videos stored in iCloud Photo Library from your Mac, iPhone, iPad, or iCloud.com with your web browser
• Perfect your photos with powerful and easy-to-use editing tools that optimize with a single click or slider, or allow precise adjustments with detailed controls
• Create professional-quality photo books with simplified bookmaking tools, new Apple-designed themes, and new square book formats
• Purchase prints in new square and panoramic sizes

It’s easy to upgrade your iPhoto library to Photos – just open the app to get started. To learn more about Photos, visit: https://www.apple.com/osx/photos/

This update also includes the following improvements:
• Adds over 300 new Emoji characters
• Adds Spotlight suggestions to Look Up
• Prevents Safari from saving website favicon URLs used in Private Browsing
• Improves stability and security in Safari
• Improves Wi-Fi performance and connectivity in various usage scenarios
• Improves compatibility with captive Wi-Fi network environments
• Fixes an issue that might cause Bluetooth devices to disconnect
• Improves screen sharing reliability

Enterprise content
For enterprise customers, this update includes the following:

• Addresses an issue that could cause Macs bound to an Active Directory server to become unresponsive at startup
• Provides the ability to set a umask that’s respected by GUI apps
• Fixes an issue installing a configuration profile for 802.1x with EAP-TLS
• Resolves an issue where folders from a DFS share point might “disappear” when viewed from the Finder on some Macs

Security Content
For detailed information about the security content of this update, see Apple security updates.

How to update your Mac
1. You should back up your Mac before installation. To do this you can use Time Machine.
2. Use the Updates pane of the Mac App Store to check for the latest Apple software updates, including this update.
3. Other software updates available for your computer might appear, which you should install. Some updates might need to be installed before other updates appear.
4. Don’t interrupt the installation process once you’ve started to update your system.
5. You might experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications installed, or if you’ve modified the operating system through other means.

You can also download the manual installer for this update. This is a useful option when you need to update multiple computers but only want to download the update once. Manual installers are available from Apple Support Downloads.

Hmmm. Not really a fan of any pinglists, but considering the fact that many of My customers are not only military vets but Older Military Veterans who almost to a fault run various versions of the ‘doze OS on their machines perhaps you should put Me on the ‘doze-ping list for now. Even though I keep telling them that I no longer support MS-Windows especially the later versions, many are older people that do not have the resources to pay for professional help so some notes about ‘doze news and possible headache cures might come in handy now and again.

I still try to push them towards Linux whenever I can, but some people are incredibly stubborn in resisting change in whatever form.

I even recommend a macmachin now and again when all they want to do is print out calendars or recipes, or even photos of der grankinden, but I also tell them straight off that I cannot provide any software support.

Still, if it stops them from coming to Me with yet another ‘doze malware or adware infestation, it is one less headache to manage so I wish them all the best.

Does that count?

I never updated my ACER, however it did catch fire from a defective battery (used for remote game cameras).

I have noticed that Windows users have learned from their mistakes (bent over without soap) and have not upgraded to the latest and greatest.

Sounds more involuntary versus voluntary. There are some here however that seem to enjoy the pain.

Well, but it depends upon the tool as well. I own some very high-end CAD and CAM software tools that I rely upon very much. See here:

http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3277243/posts

about why.

There are NO ports to the mac platform for the really high-end software, and if you ever want to see an engineer produce a huge belly-laugh ask when one of those programs will be ported to the mac platform.

NOT going to happen.

Not to mention Johnny Ives and Steve Jobs.... both behaving more high strung than a Stradivarius. Tim Kook is a slob compared to them but at least he has the balls to go flat out transgender and is traveling to Alabama to announce this

Okay, I've added you to the list, but if for any reason you want to bail, no problem, just say so.

Being a technological agnostic is a real benefit at times. Like you say, pointing people in a direction that solves their problem and keeps them from returning with a stream of new problems, that's the ticket.

I couldn't recommend Vista or Win8, but I've recommended Win7 to lots of people; I love it. On Macs I like Mavericks and recommend it; I'm not a fan of Yosemite's "flat" look, although beneath the UI it's got some nice improvements. On Linux I'm a CentOS fan, have been since 2001 (RedHat) but I recommend Ubuntu to converts because it seems to be better suited for Linux noobs. Believe it or not, my Unix of choice is NetBSD. Simple, solid, secure, portable to a fault.

I hope the Windows pings are helpful to you. They run the gamut technically, but I'm trying hard to keep politics, fanboyism, and such out. If I can get through the first month without any serious flamewars I'll consider it successfully launched. :)

May God have mercy on us. Not gay men. How about women who like gay men?

Hmmm. Originally I was going to point out that you forgot to mention Michel Obama, but more and more I am beginning to believe that not only is The Won gay but his "wife" is a tranny. Even Ann Coulter believes it.

Yes, Microslut also enjoys being violated. Linux is supported by legions of lefties, although its bosses seem to keep their private problems to themselves. Despite some left-leaning tendencies, Linux is surprisingly better at keeping its one-way holes closed. But I do like *BSD for being more friendly for business and even less gay with its private ports protected the best.

Well, I think if a man is going to go transgender, whether flat out or folded, he'd better start out with balls...

Like the songwriter said, "You can't lose what you never had."

"I own some very high-end CAD and CAM software tools that I rely upon very much."

That's one good reason for keeping a proprietary system. For *BSD and Linux, reasonably good free drafting is 2D with LibreCAD (or hoggish 3D packages with Wine). Good thing I only need 2D here.

Thanks for the smile, and a chuckle here and there. Always good to see a humorous response to an honest observation.

Too bad there was not one iota of honesty in any of your postings for DayGloRed's humor to be applied to.

You mistake subtle ridicule directed at you for humor shared with you.

Well, Ann Coulter believes a lot of things... :) She might be right, I dunno.

But I'm more of the opinion that what we have there is a hybrid, half human half yeti. The looks, gait, and disposition argue for sasquatch genes.

I suspect the rest of the family is adopted. The kids appear far too normal and generally likable (I don't believe in picking on political kids anyway).

Back for a moment to dennisw's original premise, though, "Liberace" is actually an inspired name for an OS. Liberace was a very gifted and talented musician and entertainer, the most highly-paid entertainer in the world for many years, and he left an estate worth over $100M.

How that relates to operating systems is not entirely clear, but it made sense at the time...

Oh wait, I remember how it related. "Too much of a good thing is wonderful" was his motto.

Some modern operating systems are evolving as though that were their developers' motto also.

Interesting you should note that. Although I should point out that I post on macthreads mostly to keep producing evidence that macophiles are not interested in discussing how relevant (*cough* redundant *cough*) their latest upgrades are but instead how they all display a groupthink attitude to anything that does not conform to their Holy OS’s greatness.

They are the B.Hussein.Obamba, mrs bill clinton, or any islamist in general to any comment that is less than complimentary to their True Belief.

I regularly post about fixes to the Win OS in order to address a security issue or problem found, but point out that many people use a macmachin as their preferred Dumb Terminal and watch how quickly the knives come out!

You are either a Racist because of your ancestry and hatred of any other (and therfore hate macs), a Sexist because of your gender and hatred of the other (and therfore hate macs), or an Islamophobe because you are not muslim (and therfore hate macs).

Although that last one is oftentimes translated as Racist as well... and I think “homophobe” is in there somewhere as well, now that I think about it. Probably more than once.

They can not see how self-centred, narrow-minded, and elitist their viewpoints are simply because they ARE self-centred, narrow-minded, and elitist. But you had better not attempt to point that out to them.

Applemachin Uber Alles!

> You mistake subtle ridicule directed at you for humor shared with you.

While I disagreed with Utilizer's original characterization, my attempt at humor actually was only that.

I've learned through sad experience on internet forums, even on FR at times, that subtle ridicule is often missed. And while I can wield a sledgehammer with the best of 'em, I prefer not to.

In this case, I was aiming for "disagreeing without being disagreeable", something my Mom told me was a Good Thing. Of course she wasn't thinking of kinky sexual references, but the idea is the same...

And it seems that as we proceeded downthread, Utilizer and I found common ground, something I enjoy. So no worries.

Your characterization of Mac folks is unfortunate. Like most slams it has a grain of truth -- of course there are extreme fanboys in all camps -- but really, what you say does not line up with my experience, and I've used Macs and associated with (and helped/supported) Mac users since they appeared in 1984. Actually a year before that, if you count the Lisa. I don't find your observations jibe with mine.

Yes, the fraction of Mac users who are Mac fanatics are especially so. They have the zeal of the minority zealot, amplified by the knowledge that like Avis, they're #2 and have to try harder.

Anyway, IMO you needn't continue trashing Apple folks, especially on an Apple thread. It's bad manners, Sir.

“Liberace is going to be the name of the next OSX. After Liberace will come other gay icons like Barry Manilow, Elton John and Barack Obama”
********************************************************************************************************
LOL — Now THAT was funny. We can compromise...I’ll take the talented Liberace’s and Elton John’s names for Apple’s next Operating Systems IF you can arrange for Microsoft to take the names of the untalented (IMHO - or, at most, somewhat talented but annoying) Barry Manilow and of the definitely untalented Barack Obama as names for Microsoft’s future Operating Systems.

If I were a psychiatrist I’d know how to respond to your strange ramblings and thoughts. Since I’m not, I’ll refrain and simply try to remember to warn my children that if they encounter anyone named ‘Utilizer’ to stay far, far away from the troubled soul.
