The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) has a beef with fast-food chains, particularly when theyre doing business with public hospitals. The D.C.-based non-profit recently surveyed more than 200 hospitals around the U.S. and found that 40 of themaround 20 percenthoused a fast-food restaurant.
Chick-fil-A leads the charge with 20 hospital locations, followed by McDonalds (18) and Wendys (5); donut and coffee spot Tim Hortons also makes an appearance. In terms of state saturation, Texas and Florida tie with seven hospitals apiece.
The report also points out some surprising anecdotal examples, like the McDonalds attached to the Childrens Hospital of Georgia, which offers delivery to patients.
The junk food industrys aggressive and irresponsible marketing has even been allowed to hijack the very institutions that are supposed to set an example: our hospitals, says Dr. Aseem Malhotra, who is quoted in the report.
But its not all bad news. Since PCRM began compiling its report, Indianas Riley Hospital for Children closed its McDonalds and St. Louis Childrens Hospital stopped offering Dairy Queen products.
Lets take it a step further, writes PCRM president, Dr. Neal Barnard. Just as cigarettes are banned from hospitals, why not do the same for meat, cheese, and other junk foods?

Wish they had had a place like that though when I spent 16 days there by my husband's side. Their food was down right tasteless.
They served the biggest, greasiest burgers I've ever seen. Not a salad in sight.
Our local hospital has a wonderful cafeteria. People working in the area go for lunch. The prices are incredibly cheap and the food is excellent. Recently, they opened a coffee shop, in the lobby, with a variety of flavored coffees and the most delicious pastries I’ve seen in a long time. Next to that is a gift shop that would rival any small boutique.
I read the other day about a 104 year old lady saying she drinks 3 cans of Dr. Pepper a day.
Food science is junk science
Meat and cheese are junk foods? Idiots.
The FDA is a fraud. The FDA suggests we eat grains and avoid fats. This is based on junk science.
Ammonium chloride sounds tasty right? Did you know it is also an ingredient in fireworks, safety matches and contact explosives? Eat up.
Ammonium sulfate is used most commonly as an artificial fertilizer for alkaline soils. Its also in flame retardant materials. Ammonium sulfate activates yeast, so it helps to get industrially produced bread to rise. Eat up.
But one real problem is the sugar (High Fructose corn syrup) they put in their bread.
I used to eat frequently at the McDonalds in the basement of Mercy hospital in Des Moines. Better than average.
It’s the so-called Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Despite their name, they’re really more of a militant animal rights organization, with ties to none other than PETA. They have also been accused on more than one occasion by the American Medical Association of falsifying their research.
