CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Seven-year-old Timothy Brookshire idolizes Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Tony Romo. His mother has no idea why.
Seven-year-old Timothy Brookshire gets to meet his idol, Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Tony Romo.MORE He plays a bigger role in the medical game Timothy has to go through than the role even me and my husband play, said Crystal Brookshire. Tony Romo is this child's life. Every time it looks like he's starting to get weak, we find a way to put Tony Romo in it. Well, Tony's doing this,' or Tony's doing that'. It always works.
Timothy has had complications since birth his whole life has been a serious of ups-and-downs, hospital visits, medicines and treatments. He just had his 58th surgery. Hospice has even been involved.
Timothy was born with a congenital heart defect, cleft lip and palate, he has a chromosomal disorder that is supposed to be, quote, "incompatible with life" AND, amazingly, a rare form of cancer that involves his autoimmune system.
And yet
We just keep staying positive, says Crystal. We don't worry about tomorrow. We don't stress what we can't fix. And when things get tough, our family takes one day at a time, she chuckles, then continues, ...our family takes one day at a time, but Timothy usually just asks, What do you think Tony would do?'
For months the Charlotte non-profit Dream On 3, a group that grants sports-related wishes for sick children, has been trying to coordinate a surprise trip for Timothy.
Thursday afternoon they unveiled it to him at Levine Children's Hospital.
First he was given a football... then a Cowboys #9 jersey... then a suitcase with a helmet... then a big announcement.
You're going on a trip, said Brandon Lindsey, with Dream On 3. You're going to Dallas to meet Tony Romo!"
This miracle child started dancing around, singing along to his favorite new son, Everything is Awesome.
"And we have one more surprise for you, said Brandon. Look at this laptop. Your dad is here watching!
John Brookshire is in the Army National Guard and stationed elsewhere right now. He hasn't seen his family in months. Through Skype, he was able to watch it all.
Timothy, his mom and his two older sisters all leave for Dallas on March 22. They're slated to meet Romo on March 23.
I just want to see Timothy hug Tony Romo's neck, said Crystal. It would make my whole life complete to see my baby put his arms around Tony's neck and just hold on to him.
WBTV was the only station there the entire unveil and reaction is caught on tape.
Did you see this story?
Tony had better live up to this young boy’s expectations.
I hope he does too but I think he will.
I shed tears of joy and I shed them gladly and without shame.
