Forty-seven Republican senators warned Iran's leaders on Monday that any nuclear deal needs congressional approval in order to last beyond President Obama's term, in a stark letter aimed at re-asserting lawmakers' role as talks near a key deadline.

More empty talk from Republican senators. They posture but they never produce.
...less than 2 years to go as of now.
Whatever, GOP. Talk is cheap.
A little late, The deal has already been made to make sure Iran has nukes before Obama is scheduled to leave office. WWIII Will officially start in August of 2016 so Obama can delay the election and stay in office.
And don’t see what you’re talking about. The Senate only has the option of ratifying or not ratifying the treaty and inaction is a valid decision — being a tacit rejection.
See this for what it is. A back hand, perhaps not as visible as Inviting Netanyahu to speak, but this one has more of a sting to it as it lays out the reality for both Obama and the Iranians — that nothing Obama negotiates becomes a binding treaty until the Senate says so.
It is a reminder to our Constitutional Law Professor in Chief that the US Constitution defines how treaties get made.
Obama’s supporters are going ballistic over this, labeling it treason. They have little idea about what they speak.
If Obama tells McConnell to jump, he’ll say, “How far?”, as he always does.
"He shall have the Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur...."
Right! The GOP senators might as well have written the letter on toilet paper. All of the huffing and puffing pontiications on it will get flushed down the toilet when the RINOs are called to back up their claims with action.
Who said it was going to be a treaty? Where exactly did you see that?
It will be characterized as an agreement and the Republicans will let it stand as usual. Just like they do with the spending increases and everything else that’s damaging to this country.
Yep...... I thought it was a perfect play.
Except in this case, there really is nothing for them to do other than ratify or not ratify.
Mony appropriations for executive understandings still has to originate in the house. That’s probably where you think they’ll cave. I give that 50-50 right now.
They don’t need to say treaty. It’s a monkey wrench they’ve thrown at Obama, with the choice of the word monkey having nothing to do with Obama’s race.
The WH does not see this as a treaty. All the Republicans are saying is this agreement (or pact, or whatever it actually is) can be undone by the next president. But if a Dem is president, it won’t be undone. I’m not sure a Republican president will either. How often do you see anything ever reversed?
So the Pubbies are engaging in wishful thinking again. They know they are not going to do anything about it but once again, they are posturing to give the base the impression they are fighting this. Like everything else, they will relent and cave. The GOP is simply not a serious party.
If you were Obama, why would you care what the GOP says? The party is weakness personified; its all bark and no bite. The party has no credibility at all.
“How often do you see anything ever reversed?” There have been numerous executive agreements that have changed or withdrawn on changes of administration.
What I don’t like, and I’m not 100% sure this is true, a Treaty can sit on the docket for years while waiting for support to pass ratification.
“Like everything else, they will relent and cave.”
There is nothing to relent and cave to here, unless its appropriations. Diplomacy is in the domain of the President.
That’s why they’re spitting on Obama’s shoes with this one. Getting him angry and making difficulties for him.
As I said, when you force your opponent to respond, you’re winning.
Again, this will not be a “treaty”. Its an agreement, a characterization of convenience for Obama. And he is clearly doing an end run around the feckless senate.
Yes, these senators may be spitting, but its into the wind. Obama has already won by refusing to call it what it is: a treaty. He has no fear of the senate because he knows they are all a bunch of windbags only interested in political theater — and their own re-election. That’s all they are. They are not really “opponents” in any sense of the word unless you consider bloviating to be a serious form of resistance.
I say they are caving because they will not take any action whatsoever. Letter writing is meaningless. The Iranians laughed it off.
A bully only respects those who stand up to him and punch back. I agree with you that appropriations is one way to do that. Its way past time for the senate, and especially the impotent Republicans, to do something to demonstrate its credibility.
You’re absolutely correct. It’s not going to be a treaty because this Senate will likely not vote to ratify it.
Call it whatever you want, it will be an unratified treaty aka Executive agreement or understanding that is not binding in any way to the U.S and only binding in as far as the Executive understands what it wants to understand.
The letter to Iran from the Senate was just as I assumed. A slap in the face and pushback on separation of powers that Obama is abusing. The Senate can say: “We have our interpretations too”, take us to court.
