Does your MacBook Pro freak out with distorted graphics or randomly restart? Then youll want to take advantage of Apples new repair program.
After deeming that a small percentage of MacBook Pro systems may exhibit distorted video, no video, or unexpected system restarts, Apple will start fixing parts for free on select MacBook Pro models.
image: https://stackcommerce-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/ad/image/151/singleproduct_web_the-6-ft-mfi-certified-ios-android-charging-cable_1423083568.png A class action lawsuit was filed against Apple last October over graphics issues with 2011 MacBooks. A petition on Change.org for Apple to offer free repairs currently has over 38,000 signatures. A thread on Apples support forum about the issue has over 4 million views. Now Apple will repair any MacBook Pro purchased between February 2011 and December 2013. The program covers Retina as well as non-Retina models.
While AppleCare would typically be required to get free repairs, the program means that anyone can get their affected MacBooks fixed at no cost. The computer must have distorted or scrambled video on the computer screen, no video on the computer screen (or external display) even though the computer is on, or restart unexpectedly for it to qualify.
Any Apple authorized service provider, not just Apples own stores, will do the repairs. You can check your MacBooks eligibility on Apples website. The programs lasts until February 27, 2016 or until three years after the MacBooks original purchase date.
I am now an elderly Apple user, but started back in the early 80s, helping my husband manage our architectural and project management practice for 30 years, saving us the cost of other employees and IT expenses.
I now rely on Swordmaker’s posts to keep me informed about important and accurate information that helps me sort out the truth from the FUD. He is a professional, and his business involves all platforms and operating systems. He is very gracious with his time and advice to those of us who use Macs.
And, please know that my adult children, who are busy with working, children, etc., and therefore unable to check on on FR every day, rely on me to pass along this info to keep them informed.
My son just bought a new MacBook Pro, and I have sent this article on to him. He has to use a PC notebook for work, but prefers to use Macs for his personal use at home. I hope he is not one of those who needs the information Swordmaker has provided.
He doesn’t have the time or money to keep up and deal with all the PC issues, (busy weekends running teenage boys to all the sports league practices and tournaments, laundry, marketing, and all the task of a single parent.
I just do not understand your hostility to those of us who prefer a different operating system, a reliable computing experience. I do not lash out at those who love to tinker with PCs, and call them names, or question their motives and intelligence.
Please reconsider posting such non-helpful vitriol, directed at Swordmaker, and indirectly a lot of us Apple users who do not call you names for your personal preferences in choice of computer products.
Lol, you’ve been trolled so hard, you don’t even know it. I have the feeling you have spittle spewing from your mouth onto as you scream in rage.
For some reason, seeing Swordmaker get sucked into a rope a dope always makes me smile :)
Shut up!
LOL, I have never seen you mince words. This is no exception.
As per bolobaby’s previous reply, he’s come in thrown his nasty feces, and now going to ignore the results of his carnage. Like all trolls, bolobaby is a coward. He cannot stand for the result of his handiwork or its consequences. . . Nor the light of day. He’s crawled back under his rock.
Thanks for the Mac pings. They are very informative.
“Busted. “????
You’re the one who is “busted” fool! I appreciate getting the Apple related pings. Go away! Stay off Apple threads. You’re a troll!
It is caused by investing in the "perfect and macboxen-uber-alles" hysteria.
Real computers are rarely infested with such problems, and if some script-kiddie manages to find some weakness with any particular OS, it is usually the 'nix coders that rapidly respond and fix the problem.
Macophiles, on the other hand, prefer to think of these as merely a new "feature", rather than admit that their precious macinses can be hobbled in any way, shape, or form (my precious) because their macmachines are impossible to corrupt.
Oh, look, I need to print out another calendar -I had better call someone local that has a mac to beautify it and print it out. *snicker*
Then when I want to get some truly real work done instead of bloody cartooning, I will work on these Engineering projects on a real computer with a REAL and WORKING installed OS.
Then again, I do have some photos that need adjusting, so maybe the two or three people that are liberal and wealthy enough to play with macs can help out if I promise to say nice things about Hitlery -I mean, "Hillary" (*cough* "Mrs Bill" *cough*).
If I have to.
More like the results of basing a computer (*cough*) design around a glorified graphics chipset. They spent so much time worrying about getting the most precious and special fonts to display correctly that they neglected to consider the fact that their platform needed to do more than display pretty pictures.
There are graphics cards selling on NewEgg that are the equivalent at the very least of any macophile's favourite machine -and you can verify that simply by clicking on NewEgg's latest sale ongoing.
I hope that someday the macoholics wake up and realize that pretty fonts and graphics enhancements do not a truly useable machine make.
You are lucky. The local mac shop here charges 65/hr (US FRNs) just to look at any macmachine, with a one-hour minimum.
Guess they know that they have a “captive audience”, so to speak.
Actually, I happen to agree with him. This is FreeRepublic, not Computer Times.
Post things about macgroupie fantasies? Then do not be surprised that there are others that are not fans and post responses.
She can simply start her own blog instead of taking up bandwidth on this forum for her personal amusement / macophile leanings.
Not everyone -SURPRISE!- cares about what happens to a glorified graphics chipset boxen.
After all, it is not like it is a REAL computer.
Real computers have actual Engineers using them to work out real problems that need solutions, not worrying about what paintbrush to use on their current project.
Im an ubuntu guy...I am totally open source...but I enjoy your posts. Just because I prefer another platform doesnt mean I cannot see the good points apple offers the market. Its called intellectual honesty.
Thanks for the laugh. If there were actually that many of the true macophiles contributing, then why is this latest freepathon taking so long?
If they can afford to pay that much for a substandard machine just for the logo bragging rights, then they can afford to contribute something substantial towards keeping this site online!
How about they leave off their lattes for a month and give the money instead to FreeRepublic? It is not like it will make a dent in their monthly spending, after all.
You might as well not waste the effort, mate. Just like that one graphics chipset programmer I knew a few years back was adamant about how the whole world would be so much better if they simply adopted his favoured graphics chipset instead of concentrating on everyone else’s main CPU families, you will never convince the macophiles that their enhanced-graphics boxen are not the be-all and end-all of the universe.
You only need to look at posted pics of some people using macs as dumb terminals at NASA and then view the posts of the macophiles’ near-orgasmic responce as some sort of validation of the greatness of their goddess and you can not help but see that there is no way to convince them that their semi-computers are not anything but perfection in action.
Sad, really.
It's the first.
So obviously, really, and quite sad in a way. Some people simply are meant to enjoy being part of a particular groupthink definition, and see no reason to look beyond their preconcieved notions in lieu of being part of the herd.
Eh. OK, maybe part of the second as well, but time will tell.
interesting ping
WELL ... I see another member of the APPLE-HATERS CULT on Free Republichas arrived here ... LOL ...
Y’all are as boring and idiotic as the next Apple-Haters Cult member, besides being outright LIARS. You know ... since you’re such a LIAR, that alone shows you’re not really a FReeper but a DU mole and/or “plant”, posing on Free Republic.

NASA’s control room flooded with Macs during Mars Curiosity landing
By Slash Lane

Sometimes pictures are worth a thousand words, like those that appeared over NASA’s live feed showing a control room riddled with Macs and other Apple products during the historical landing of the Curiosity rover on planet Mars last night.
The photos, captured from the live stream by Reddit users (via TMO), show nearly a dozen Macs in addition to iPhones and even iPads in use by the space agency’s Entry, Descent and Landing Operations (EDL Ops) team at its Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California Sunday evening.
NASA engineers can be seen fixated on their MacBook Pro screens and incoming data as the $2.6 billion Curiosity made a dramatic arrival on the Martian planet during what NASA scientists have dubbed “seven minutes of terror.”
One closeup photo confirms that these Macs were indeed running Mac OS X and not a flavor of Windows, while a second shows a lone IBM ThinkPad looking a bit out of place among the Apple-dominated lab.
The two thousand pound car-sized rover set off from earth on November 26th, equipped with 17 cameras and a laser that will help NASA engineers survey the planet and its terrain from the Jet Propulsion Lab in an effort to determine whether Mars ever had an environment that was able to support life forms.
Here you display your ignorance of apple products. I use a variety of devices, Windows, Droid, and I finally bought Apple items.
I purchased a Samsung tablet after MUCH research, and it has massively better specs, more powerful processor and graphics processor, bigger, more vibrant screen. Apple tablets blow it away in performance. I compared it to the iPad mini, which should have lagged far, far behind using your "newer GPU" analysis, but the iPad is far far smoother, opens and closes apps far more quickly, and the samsung is just flat out clunky to get around.
I've had laptops from a variety of manufacturers, all windows based, with a variety of speeds and abilities. My Macbook Air simply smokes them in performance and user friendliness. That glossy Mac is more than how nice the screen is, or looks. It's the feel of using it, when it's so well optimized, I didn't have to tweak a thing. EVERY laptop I've ever had I've had to tweak even basic things like freaking mouse pointers, and turn things on that I want on all the time, and turn things off I never want to run. Not the Mac. I opened it up, and started using it. It's perfectly set up.
My windows gaming machine is a monster, great processor, great GPU, water cooled, and it still regularly loses a browser tab, crashes a program, etc. It's great for my game, but my little Mac runs every bit as well. I bought the Macbook air with the slowest processor, too. It's less than half the speed, half the processing cores, and runs just as well. BUT, I don't game on it, it's not it's mission, so I don't even try to compare here. I'm not a Mac "bow down and worship" kind of guy, I spent a lot of years in Linux as well, but just objectively studying these things in use, versus comparing specs, Mac is an outstanding platform for the vast majority of what people actually use a computer for. Is it better than your Newegg GPU? Depends on how you use it.
I've been a member of FR since 1997, and of its two predecessor forums for some time before that, insofar as that means anything.
I rely on these Apple posts both personally and professionally, and I refer friends and coworkers to them who would not otherwise have interest or reason to visit FR. I can count 20 or so people who have come for the Apple posts at my suggestion and over time become full-on participants.
I'm frankly sick of you and the other trolls polluting these threads with your inane chatter.
If you don't like Apple, don't click the thread. You're as bad as a Lost Kos-er.
We're doing business here. Stay the hell out.
