The design of the National Review has changed greatly. Pictures are much bigger and almost fill the screen. I don't like it and prefer Free Republic's cleaner look. I go to political web sites to *read*. What do you think? If enough people grumble maybe they will go back.
It stinks. Seeing a picture of some angry woman taking up 1/3 of the page doesn’t help. I’m not a fan of the whole “social” design of most websites these days, and the site is riddled with click bait, but what can you do, FR is funded with private donations, NR has to pay the bills somehow.
Way too much going on on the page. I like The Federalist webpage the best at this point.
I suspect that it’s due to the fact that it’s “friendlier” to smart phones and tablets..where more eyeballs go every day. By comparison, ever tried to read FR on your Iphone?...almost impossible to navigate around. FYI...SI.com just totally redesigned their site, and it stinks..it’s all but unusable on a desktop, but works fine on the smart phone.
This happened tomPJ Media in the last couple days, too. Are they related?
The site is completely unusable now. I gave up on it. Too bad because they have good content.
What’s with the big picture format? Are they going for the second grade coloring book cohort?
FR is super on the iPad. None of the five minutes of the page jerking all over the place while all the pics and adverts load. None of the inadvertent clicks on sleazy ads you don’t want.
I think there are some coding issues with that Miley Cyrus image or some layout problems. But it is visually more appealing, and more friendly in terms of making it easy to quickly share articles.
I have AdBlock, so I dont know if they are assaulting people with popups, floating ads, and that annoying “sign up for our email newsletter” thing whenever you go to most sites like this.
I might be going there more often now.
Got a link?
I gave up on NR a while back. They rarely wrote anything I wanted to read. Just went there...the font is big enough to read from across the room. Not my taste, but neither is their politics.
“Seeing a picture of some angry woman taking up 1/3 of the page doesnt help.”
Absolutely. You would think that they would have chosen a more pleasant picture for their roll out. It is hideous.
When Robert Costa went to WaPo..it hurt them..he had some great sources inside the GOP in both the House and Senate. OTOH..they have some good young writers coming up..Eliana Johnson for example..
LOL. Good one. That is pretty much every website these days.
AND your TV WATCHES YOU!................
NR is still online? I wouldn’t know. I gave up on them after what they did to John Derbyshire.
G.o.p.e mouthpiece alert!
I gave up on NR 10 years ago. A mere skeleton of what it was years ago.
In general, the NRO is suffering from smugness.
It’s a stark improvement.
I read NRO everyday and navigated the entire website this morning and, other than a glitch in The Corner section, it is refreshing (and fairly “clean” for a debut re-model).
I do not like the tablet look of websites. Nor white text on a black background. I quickly leave those sites.
