A man-on-street video. The University of Michigan took some pretty big steps toward stifling free speech on its campus this month with its Inclusive Language program. Theyve even gone as far as to create a list of unacceptable words. Just how important is the 1st amendment to students today. Im pretty sure that after watching the video, youll feel more compelled to protect the 1st amendment than ever before!

By my summary research, this particular expression dates to 1987, with Jesse Jackson at Stanford. Even so, I don't expect any sort of exoneration from the citation of earlier sources.
Not hippies. Yippies
Good point. It never was.
That could be true, or it could be that the movement was co-opted by liberal Marxists. It seems that wherever they see civil or social unrest they move in to influence the mindless of the aimless followers that inevitably get involved.

I just got the chance to watch this video. Very well done!
You said at the end to the 2 students: “So maybe we’re talking about all different kinds of diversity on campus, except intellectual diversity?” That student sitting closest to you looked like she just got slapped in the face with a steaming hot wake-the-hell-up-and-open-your-eyes burrito.
(Is the word, “Burrito,” offensive?)
What I teach my Sons, and what I explain to everyone who’ll listen is that there’s no one in control of your feelings except yourself. And, there’s no one in control of mine but me. If I say something that hurts someone’s feelings, that’s THEIR fault because they gave me that power over their emotions. If someone says something offensive to me, and I get hurt, that would be MY fault.
And, you’re right. This is the fault of conservatives as well. But, it’s not the fault of conservatism as a whole. People like us are pretty non-confrontational. We get concealed carry permits not because we want to shoot the first person who crosses our paths. We get them because we love all life. While doing so, we actively avoid placing ourselves in situations that might result in confrontations with others. It’s just our nature.
Of course, there are exceptions to this. Limbaugh, Hannity, Coulter, and other conservatives like you get fed up with hiding our ideologies, and seek out the opposition in an attempt to wake people up. And people with that drive are to be commended. You have a passion that can’t stay contained, and the courage to display it for all.
But, we’re not all like that. For example, you and I know that there are a LOT of conservatives in Hollywood. But they stay in the closet so they can keep working. Not all of them, though. Jon Voight, Bo Derek, James Woods, Gary Sinise, Chuck Norris, etc. But the vast majority of them can’t speak out due to fear of getting ostracized by their peers on the left, and losing their jobs. Those conservative actors I’ve listed above have established careers already, and don’t really fear retaliation for their beliefs and expressions of their ideologies.
Just like these students you witnessed.
Conservative-leaning students can’t risk exposing their views because of the fear of retaliation and ostracization from their teachers; AND friends because either they are liberals, non-ideological, or haven’t yet found their ideologies. Thus, they strive to avoid confrontations.
Limbaugh once said that liberalism is the easiest and most gutless path to walk.
We choose that difficult path.
Stay warm, Steven.
