VANITY: Best Cylinder 0.22 LR Handgun?
My Inbred Brain ^ | 18FEB2015 | VANITY of Cletus

Posted on 02/18/2015 5:35:41 AM PST by Cletus.D.Yokel

Looking for input on a good 22LR handgun, preferably a revolver [so as I don't have to hunt down brass for the local constabulary, post use].

I'd also ask y'all for any "barrel length / configuration" you think might support my home-defense needs.

Disclosure: I'm in TX.

That would be my first choice. I had one 43 years ago. Wish I still had it.

Yeah...I wasn’t fond of the Taurus 94. I thought it was OK for close range, but I didn’t want to own it. Like everything Taurus makes...it’s inexpensive.

Quality costs.

If you have a very reliable always-shoots pistol and practice, practice, practice short range head shots (10-15’), you don’t need a big caliber, IMO.

Yep. .22LR is very reliably leathal on humans, pigs, and other large targets if you hit the right spot.

I've regretted every gun I've ever sold.

I have a Mark II target like this one. I love everything about it, though it took a little practice to become familiar with the take down.

Yep, point the muzzle down, pull the trigger to ler the hammer fall forward, then raise the muzzle up enough to let the strut point straight down, and pop the housing into place. Takes two seconds, but try to explain it to someone over the phone. Argh!

Revolver: Ruger Single-Six
Semi: Ruger SR22

both are superb shooters

Holy crap that’s pricey! I bought a nice, slightly used 4” blue Diamondback in .22lr back in the early 90’s for $260. When I shot it, I remembered why I don’t care for .22 revolvers, the RG single-action from the mid 70’s only held 6 as well. Not enough shots for plinking! Also had a .38 DB in nickel [’94, $300] and a cherry Detective Special 2nd model .38 [$300, mid 90’s], bought a DS used at the gun shop I worked at in the mid-70’s used for $60. Got a new Colt .22 conversion unit there for my Government Model for $70, new. Now if you’ll excuse me, from seeing today’s prices, I have to go have a memorial cry... ;)

If you're sticking with .22 LR, you can't go wrong with an S&W K-22 revolver, or a Ruger Mk. III semi-auto.

Seriously, though, if you're looking for a self-defense weapon, go for a 9 mm, or at the minimum, a .380.

Why is that?

Taurus .38 revolver.

Everyone I know who has one likes it.

And learn to reload so that you can and your family can put a lot of rounds through the gun. They may enjoy it. The outfit you should buy is the Lee Classic Loader, usually runs less than 30.00 and all you need is a plastic faced hammer. Best ammo you will ever load. www.Titanreloading.com is a good source. REad the directions 5 times before starting to use the reloader and follow the directions to the letter.

Here’s where things get interesting.

Powder plus primer loads:

You can load a training load (light) for the .38, shoot round ball, shoot black powder etc.

Primer only loads for short range can killing, most of these can be used in the basement or in the garage with a suitable backstop. They are generally accurate to 30 feet:

Shoot wax bullets, round ball, swaged bullets from airsoft plastic ammo, molded bullets in bullet moulds using a hot glue gun. The last two bullets are reusable, by the way.

.38 special and its variants are part of the fun calibers:

.38 Special
.357 magnum
.357 Max. Apparently there is a pistol out there now and it sure looks like a good black powder round.

.44 Special
.44 Magnum

.45 Long Colt
.45 Cowboy Special

There may be some others in the smaller calibers such as .32, but what you are looking for is a straight wall case which tends to be larger calibers.

Have fun!

Important note on barrel length:

The barrel length in a home defense situation is not very important as the average distance will be 10’ to 15’. At the shooting range the longer barrel will be more accurate and will be more fun as it will be more accurate. You will shoot more.

If you are carrying, the barrel length is important. A snubby should work but they are primarily short range revolvers. Most longer barreled .38s will shoot rather well at 100 yards.

precisely why I prefer a Judge Taurus loaded with 410-00/Buck but my wife is concerned about the “kick” from such a handgun.

Gotta keep momma happy.

...my family who would need to, in the end, live with taking a human life.

By forcing you into a position that required you to shoot them, they've forfeited any claim to humanity.

Once you get the hang of it, it’s a snap. But it’s not intuitive.
