Austrian architect Wolfgang Lassy says he hasn't been able to get a good night's rest for years, with the Catholic Church waking him up every 15 minutes.
That's because for hundreds of years, the church bells of Linz were allowed to chime at night every quarter of an hour, disrupting many residents' sleep. Now, Lassy is seeking to end the centuries-old practice. The Austrian has sued the Catholic Church in Linz and has even expressed his deep discontent in a letter to Pope Francis. So far, he hasn't heard back from the Holy See.
"Lassy has been unable to sleep at night for years because the church bells chimed exactly 222 times every night with a volume of 75 decibels," Lassy's lawyer, Wolfgang List, told The Washington Post on Thursday. His client lives only about 250 feet away from the Mariendom cathedral, which houses the bells.
According to his lawyer, Lassy had tried to resolve the problem for two years before he decided to take his concerns to court last December. When it became clear that the local church representatives would not simply stop the bells without a holy or judicial order to do so, Lassy sent a letter to the pope Feb. 4.
Saying that a lawsuit was not their preferred way of dealing with the problem, List wrote: "The chiming of the bells has no religious background, but it causes massive sleeping disorders for the neighbors of the Mariendom in Linz, with significant repercussions for their health, such as states of exhaustion."
"The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has declared a night's rest a human right," the letter to the Holy Father goes on. "We therefore beseech you to intervene
to ensure that human right of the people of Linz to a healthy and refreshing nights sleep is respected and that the bells no longer chime at night.

I would think a non-moron could figure out how to buy a house that’s not next-door to a church that rings the bells every 15 minutes.
Who was there first? It’s like the home owner who builds downwind of a pig farm and then complains about the smell.

"I am an American fighting man. I serve in the forces which guard my country and our way of life. I am prepared to give my life in their defense." |
I suspect he has some kind of mental fixation with the bells. I do sort of understand where he is coming from tho.
Several years ago, after a deadly wreck at an intersection maybe 300 yards from me, the state took action. They put in a series of warning strips across the highway to make sure you know you are about to have to stop.
They then put up some heavy duty flashing warning lights.
Now every time a car comes by I hear a series of whump, whump whumps. Sometimes an 18 wheeler will literally shake the foundation a little.
After a few months I began to not notice them.
The church bell is one of the things I like about my little town.
Nothing quite like a church bell in the distance on a quiet summer morning.
Yes, the occasional chiming is relaxing and tranquil. I find it reassuring.
Lived in Germany for several years back in the 60’s and loved the sound of bells ringing in the morning and evening, one of my finest memories.
But not a guy standing in a turret yelling the Muslim call to prayer?
In the town where I grew up the siren over the fire department blows every day at noon. They started doing it in the days when there were few motors and people were out working in the fields so they knew when it was noon. You can hear it for miles.
I had a bedroom barely 100 feet from it. If anybody asked when I would be up and around I told them I’ll definitely be up by noon.
Pops out of a clock every 15 minutes.
Or any time; when I step out of my house at the top of or bottom of the hour, the Church bell sounds in the distance are amazing and soothing!
I declare freedom from whining to be a human right!
Dude, either move or buy ear plugs. The church bells have been ringing for centuries. You can not claim that you didn't know that when you bought the place.
And were, sir, is your hometown? Looks like PA or upper NY.
Western MD panhandle, on the WV line with PA about 15 minutes away in the other direction. On a clear day, you can see three states from the back porch - our family home is on a mountain ridge. Appalachia.
Yet,according to my sister, you barely notice them after you've lived there for a while.
I smell a rat here.
I like church bells.... But, every 15 minutes.. ALL NIGHT long....is abusive. I 100% agree with this guy.
I suffered through it one July night in Jorgen, Switzerland. Had to keep my windows open, because it was HOT, and there was no AC. I heard EVERY chime....all night.
Just horrible...
People live next to expressways and railroad tracks...usually get used to the noise after a few nights!!
