Obama proposes new agency to make Americans’ food safer

President Barack Obama wants to create a new government agency dedicated to keeping the nation’s food safe.

The proposal in the president’s budget released Monday comes after outbreaks of illnesses linked to chicken, eggs, peanuts and cantaloupe in recent years. More than a dozen federal agencies oversee food safety, and consumer advocates have long called for bringing all those functions together in a single home. […]

The budget proposes consolidating the Agriculture Department’s Food Safety and Inspection Service and all of FDA’s food safety oversight into one new agency within the Department of Health and Human Services. The new agency also would coordinate with state and local health departments, a job that is now mostly handled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In the budget proposal, the Obama administration says the current system’s “fractured oversight and disparate regulatory approaches” cause confusion. Consolidation “is an essential step to reforming the federal food safety system overall,” it says. …

Food safer? The best way to make food safer is to KEEP THE GOVERNMENT OUT OF FOOD PRODUCTION!!!

I never saw a law or government agency improve food safety.

Being in the food distribution end of the business; federal regulation (HACCP) has definitely improved food safety, by codifying the entire process from the raw materials to the food on your plate...

Now this new proposal simply is a political ploy... and completely not needed...

HACCP has to be enacted by individual crotch scratchers. Most of us in the business used the FDA guidelines because they were the same in all the states.

Do I follow the 160F rules on thick pork chops? No... Don't eat here if you don't like it.

Even HACCP has no Constitutional basis under article 1, section 8. The States can handle it.

....but the FDA guidelines has improved food safety....

That was your point, was it not?

I would agree the states can handle their food safety issues, but having an over reaching nationwide guide line resolves potential different state standards....

Currently California is causing an egg issue because they exceed federal guild lines...and other states are having to comply to California regs...driving up the price of eggs...

My point is that it doesn't matter if a law makes it better, but that the law comply with Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution. I see nothing about food or drugs in Article 1, Section 8.

The feds need to stick with the rules. The States will manage, including telling CA to pound sand if required.

The one upside I could see of such a reorganization is that it could eliminate redundancies in the various food safety programs and save the taxpayer money. Of course, Congress would have to ensure that it actually does that.

Nanny State PING!

I think we should get Congress out of our food supply, too, except for imports.
