(VANITY) TOURNAMENT OF CHART-TOPPERS ('80S)
me | 2/1/15 | me

Posted on 02/01/2015 3:52:05 PM PST by the OlLine Rebel

ROUND 2 of the greatest hits of the '80s begins!

Due date: Sunday, Feb 8 @6:00 pm (Eastern)

Had to cut short the Round 1, as the response wasn't enough. Will try weekly rounds from now on.

This Round takes the top 6 songs of each year of the '80s, and pairs them in brackets along with the best #7s as voted in Round 1.

TOPICS: Arts/Photography; Chit/Chat; Music/Entertainment
KEYWORDS: 1980s; 80s; 80smusic; americana; billboard; culture; eighties; entertainment; mtv; music; nineteeneighties; nostalgia; popculture; popmusic; popularmusic; rock; rockroll; top40; top40music; wob

There will be 32 pairs to vote on. 32 songs will emerge as the winners. Any ties will have a run-off. The vote is simply, which of each pair is better? No answer, no vote.

Round 1 featured voting for the best 4 songs from the #7 list. Our results:

1987 "Here I Go Again" Whitesnake

1985 "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" Tears for Fears

1982 "Jack & Diane" John Cougar

1983 "Maneater" Daryl Hall & John Oates

1984 "Hello" Lionel Richie

1981 "Kiss on My List" Hall & Oates

1980 "Coming Up" Paul McCartney

1988 "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" Belinda Carlisle

1989 "Wind Beneath My Wings" Bette Midler

1986 "Party All the Time" Eddie Murphy

No run-offs were needed (Maneater beat Hello by 1 point). The top 4 advance to Round 2. Brackets are tricky but I tried to pair up and group everything the best I can (every year really only allows 3 pairs, not 4).

After going through these I now kind of wish I hadn't. LOL. Some of these are the absolute worst songs of the 80s.

Any list of great hits from the 80s that doesn't include two of the best of all time -- "Boys Of Summer" by Don Henley and "Mandolin Rain" by Bruce Hornsby -- is woefully incomplete!

That’s What Friends Are For was originally a song by Rod Stewart for the soundtrack to a movie with Michael Keaton, Henry Winkler and Shelly Long in 1982, Night Shift.

I’ll be glad to post my picks later.

I’m sure I’m in the minority on FR, being not a big fan of league sports, but for those of us who aren’t too familiar with the bracket system, would it be possible to get a basic explanation (or a link to one)?

Sorry I did not think through how to post results of the last and then the actual contests for this week. FR is 1-time chance to get it right.

We are “starting” with 64 songs in a bracket “play-off” for 32 songs.

(Really we had to pick 4 songs out of that first list to add to the top 6 of each year to make a total of 64; otherwise it would be 60 or 70 songs from the decade’s top, which does not fit in a play-off.)

To: RansomOttawa

To do a play-off system, often called “brackets”, we need to start with 64 which halves until only 2 are left in the “final”.

The trick here is to pair off items so the “best” of these plays the “worst”, giving advantage to the best to stay the best (in theory).

You will see this soon in the college basketball tournaments - 64 teams start the play-offs, being paired by conference and “standing”. (On my song list, you’ll see the song ranking and year.)
