The awards are not about cultural populism. It amazes me how every year some populist wonders “why didn’t the latest Pixar anime grossfest get nominated?” I enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy, but it wasn’t Oscar-worthy. Neither were those awful Hobbit movies (all of them), which is why I was upset when the academy honored “Return of the King.”
They’re about a fine balance. The Oscars virtually never honor truly under the radar films that hardly anyone saw...films that barely get distributed and only play at festivals.
Gone girl,Unbroken,The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game were all excellent.
Glad to see the Polish movie “Ida” nominated for Best Foreign Language Picture.
Agree. Selma is this years version of 12 Years A Slave. Regardless of the quality of the movie , the politically correct subject matter makes it a leading Oscar contender.
I was speaking of the performance. In my opinion Pratt, and Bautista, at the least, turned in worthy performances. The script was well done and deep. The music well done. Overall, it was a better picture than the others, in spite of the cultural elites spite over popular movies.
Really doubt “Selma” is going to win. Either it will be “Birdman” or “Boyhood”. The former because it is a parody of all those action hero movies. The later because it won best drama at the Golden Globes and those who vote in the Oscars go with what took place at Golden Globes.
“Selma” will not win because folks have had enough of the playing of the old, beat-up race card stuff.
Dark horse winner is “American Sniper”.

Never knew it was Poland. :)
Also because 12 Years won last year. It would be like another Holocaust film winning the year after Schindler’s List.
Very true.
I agree. I think "Selma"'s honor was just getting nominated.
Please, no offense intended, FRiend, some like vanilla, some like chocolate. But I was looking forward to seeing Grand Budapest, and was tremendously disappointed. I just thought it was.. well.. just dumb.
It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, I admit.
I don't think they are supposed to. There are awards for the "smaller" more independent movies. And, maybe, there is a reason these movies only play at "festivals".
Doesn’t he also host the Tony Awards?
The Ghey will be strong with this one.
RE: The Ghey will be strong with this one.
Well, they had a female gay — Ellen Degeneres host last year, so, why not a male gay?
Michael Keaton is the odds on favorite to win Best Actor.
If he doesn’t win look for the guy who played the homosexual in The Imitation Game to win or the guy who played atheist Stephen Hawkins to win it.
Does Dinesh DeSouza have a prayer with his documentary getting a nomination?
