WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) West Virginia quietly passed the ignominious milestone of having less than half of its adult, civilian population in the workforce in November.
State data compiled by the Labor Department shows that West Virginias civilian labor participation rate has fallen to 49.8%, from 50% in October. The national rate in December was 62.7%.
The Mountain State is the only state in the history of the series, which goes back to 1976, to have fallen below 50%, though Mississippi at 50.8% isnt far behind.
The troubles that have befallen West Virginia have been well publicized, notably the diminished demand for coal.

Obamas America.....
The demand is still there for coal. The problem is the government.
The war on coal.
Obama's fault.

They didn’t build that!
Obama did.
The Rural Ghettoes in America are not all that different for the Urban Ghettoes, with generations of families all on Welfare and little reason or motivation to better themselves.
Their best day of the month is when the government recharges their Welfare Cards and they can go off to the store to buy fatty foods, cigarettes and alcohol.
Damn revenoors ruined the whisky business too!
“Map at site showing employment rates....”
No surprise there, West Virginia number one, and Mississippi not far behind in the number do folks that just don’t want to work.
You don’t ever hear about endemic crime in the rural ghettos. I wonder if that is because there is less crime or if it is because rural ghettos have less interaction with the rest of society.
Poor whites killing whites isn’t newsworthy to AP.
Only whites killing blacks. Or white celebs who kill themselves.
Just my guess.
With Meth, crime rates in rural areas are higher than crime rates in New York City.
West Virginia has the nations highest rate of social security disability recipients - one out of ten residents on SSDI

Is that figure adjusted for those past retirement age who have in fact retired? If not that could skew the results substantially.
Yes, it is an adjusted number that does not include retired people.

its a full time job to get the unemployment, and then the food stamp card, and the health care for the kids and they you get into the real good money and get yourself "disabled" which is the gold standard for the easy life especially when you're NOT disabled...
