Bears clean house: GM Emery, Trestman fired
abc 17 ^ | 12-20-2014

Posted on 12/29/2014 8:21:14 AM PST by Citizen Zed

Trestman was hired in a winding interview process that included more than 12 candidates. The other finalist for the opening was Bruce Arians, who just completed a 10-6 season with the Arizona Cardinals.

Trestman said Sunday he planned to return, but after a 6-10 finish and drama-filled season, his fate was determined several weeks ago. The Bears lost five straight games to end the season and eight of their final 10.

Chicago was 8-8 in 2013.

Billed as a quarterback whisperer, Trestman had strong results as a rookie coach. The Bears finished second in the NFL in scoring to the Denver Broncos in 2013, but the decline was dramatic in 2014. Chicago was 21st in passing and 23rd in scoring.

Emery's biggest decisions did not pan out. He invested $126 million in quarterback Jay Cutler prior to the 2014 season on a seven-year deal that made Cutler the NFL's highest-paid player in 2014 at $22.5 million.

The Vikings...the Chicago Cubs of football.

Who else could cancel sure trips to the Super Bowl by:

A. Missing the game-clinching, very makable field goal...the only miss of the entire season, and

B. Killing the game-winning drive by being penalized for, of all things, having 12 guys in the huddle?

You've got to be a Vikings fan to know true misery.

AS a Green Bay Packer fan I take great delight in the Bears distress.

I'll do you one better: As a Green Bay Packers fan, who lives 1.5 miles from Jay Cutler here in the People's Socialist RepuliK of Illinois, I couldn't be happier that the Shitcago Bears haven't found a way to get rid of Cutler.

At least not yet.

You build a team around an offensive line.

If I were a GM, my first priority would be to get me the best damned offensive line coach money can buy who can take a ragtag bunch of journeyman offensive linemen and turn them into a solid unit.

Wilson is under the new Rookie contract, so he is dirt cheap. The question is if Seattle keeps him after next year and if they do then they will not be able to afford the rest of the team that they have now.

Quite frankly, it isn’t Jay Cutler.

Oh? Do tell. Yes, Cutler put up good numbers in 2013 HOWEVER even with an improved offensive front line and arguably three of the most talented receivers in the NFL (Bennett, Jeffries, Marshall) and with Matt Forte in the backfield, Cutler STILL couldn't consistently connect with his receiver core. The result: Short passes to Matt Forte all the time. Yes, Cutler IS a major part of the Bears problem. Cutler mentally "checked out" at mid season. It was obvious by the devil-may-care expression on his face during the games.

The Defense was terrible most of the season, and the offensive line play was lacking as well.

Offensive Line was better than last year (well, somewhat) however you're spot on with the Defense. The Chicago Bears have the what, third or fourth oldest Defense in the NFL. The Defense was seemingly always a "step behind" whatever offense they were up against and frankly, Mel Tucker's Defensive Scheme WHICH NEVER CHANGED ALL DAMN' YEAR didn't help things either.

Look, I'm a Green Bay Packers fan (I became one THE DAY THE BEARS SIGNED JAY "COACH-KILLER" CUTLER) and I could generally give a rats ass about the Bears at this point. The problems with the Bears IMO have always started with the Ownership (McCaskey family) and run their way through the GM's office and finally down to the field and the team.

I will NEVER forget Michael McCaskey saying on TV one day some years ago when the Bears were entering yet another rebuilding year that "the Bears just need one magical player, and that player is the Quarterback."

If you want to "fix" the Bears, cleaning out the Front Office and firing the Coaching staff is a good start but for crying out loud the Bears Ownership SUCKS!

Oh yeah - Cutler sucks too!! I said it the day the Bears signed him, I said it again when they inked him to a $107 million dollar deal, and I've said it every damn' game since. The Bears Front Office and the McCaskey Family (who had to sign-off on the $107m deal) believed Cutler to be an "elite" quarterback. Well, those of us who pay attention to football and looked at the numbers Cutler put up in Denver and his first year here in Chicago KNEW Cutler wasn't worth the money he was being paid. The only thing "elite" about Jay Cutler is his salary. The truth is, Jay Cutler will NEVER be anything other than a mid to low-tier Quarterback ANYWHERE in the NFL. On most teams, he wouldn't even be a STARTER.

I think most Bears Fans this year have had enough of Cutler and his excuses. They see him making $25 million for the 2014 season and have NOTHING to show for it. Several family members are Season Ticket holders (as are a fair number of my friends.) Guess what? They're not renewing their season tickets for 2015. That explains why the last 5 games the Chicago Bears have been running so many season ticket commercials.

They already know the result of putting a horse shit product on the field is resulting in fewer and fewer season ticket holders.

I'm gonna go egg Jay Cutler's house now....... it's 1.5 miles from me, drive by it several times a week. I wonder if Kristin's tired of cleaning up the mess yet.

The Packers could use a backup.
Let the Bears pay him his salary, and with McCarthy and Rodgers coaching him he might make a decent backup. And he will be about 6 INTs better not having to face the Packers D....

GO PACK GO

I was a little confused yesterday watching the Bears/Vikings game yesterday as I assumed they were playing in Chicago when I saw the game was outdoors.

Then I finally saw the Vikings emblem mid-field and realized they weren't playing in Chicago. (I was only peripherally paying attention to the game, mostly listening to it on the radio while I did some plumbing work in my kitchen.)

When did the Vikings start playing outside at home???? It was very confusing not seeing them play inside....

No kidding. I’ve grown old watching them find new ways to “choke” in big games. I swear the Vikings are cursed, just like the Chicago Cubs billy goat curse.

The Vikings are playing at the University of Minnesota's stadium until their new stadium is ready, sometime in 2016. The college stadium that the Vikings play in right now is a outdoor stadium. The Vikings new stadium will be a fixed dome stadium.

The Metrodome was demolished earlier this year.

The only time I can recall the “Vikings” “Played” outside was when the “Blow-Up-Doll””Dome” DEFLATED and BROKE because of heavy. wet snow. They “played” at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TCF_Bank_Stadium(U or Minnesota’s Field).

2014 changes[edit]

Beginning in 2014, the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings will use TCF Bank Stadium as their home venue for two seasons while their new stadium, Vikings Stadium, is under construction. To help accommodate the Vikings, TCF Bank Stadium underwent several changes, including a new playing surface with heating coils, increased storage space throughout the stadium, and concession upgrades.[37] In addition, temporary bleachers have been installed that have increased the stadium’s capacity to 52,525.[1] These accommodations were expected to cost about $7 million - an amount that will be attributed to the overall construction cost of Vikings Stadium.[38]

I don’t disagree with you on Cutler’s problems at QB, but like I said before, they do not have another alternative at the moment.

I think he has value. Orton just retired and the Bills are searching for a new QB. The Rams are done with Bradford and would take a hard look at Cutler, and Arizona needs another QB as they really don’t have any options due to injuries. Do merely ‘dump’ Cutler makes zero sense. They need to get value for him or play him till they can find someone better. If you can name one also-ran journey-man QB, or possible draft pick for the Bears at QB, go ahead and name one. They have the 7th pick in the coming draft. Who can they get for that?

-Or do they use it on the best defensive prospect at defensive end they can find and look for a QB in free agency? Either way, they have to keep Cutler for the moment. Cutting him and getting nothing is just stupid IMHO.

I am soooo glad Cutler is now the Bears' problem and not the Broncos. He made it very clear here that he will never change his throwing style to cut back on the turnovers. I don't know why Chicago thought they were hiring a coach that could change his attitude because no coach has been able to to do it and I don't think any coach can.

Now that he has his contract to pay him more money than he needs to live the rest of his life he has even less reason to change.

No highly touted CFL coach has done anything but fail miserably in the NFL since Bud Grant back in the 70’s.

Yep, you said that and I glossed over it. Unfortunately for the Bears I think you're right. I think they're "stuck" with him through at least next year while they wait to draft someone out of college or pick up someone on free agency. Any "trade" for Cutler will likely involve the Bears still paying the majority of his remaining guaranteed salary to whoever picks him up and at that point, why not keep him around beyond next year as a backup (a rather expensive backup, but still, a backup.) Who knows, the skies could part and divine intervention could happen and another team takes him and his expensive salary off the Bears hands. That would have to be one desperate team!

Orton just retired and the Bills are searching for a new QB.

I missed that. Shame, Orton had real potential when he was here and then with the Bronco's. I liked him more as a person than a QB as I grew up in Altoona Iowa and went to high school with so many of the Orton family members at SE Polk High School. Don't think any team that picked him up ever really tried to develop him, again -- a shame. Ahh well, wish him well.
