Bill Callaham, a California lawyer, never had a chance to hand over his Rolex, cell phone or hundreds of dollars in cash. The men who attacked him from behind in the Central Business District never made any demands. They beat him unconscious, breaking his nose and his jaw. And afterward, he said, they took nothing.
"If somebody had confronted me and asked for money, I would've happily given them my money," Callaham said Friday, a week after the assault. "I don't know if it was random, I mean, I have no idea. I just think it's a sad state of society right now."

He sounds like a clueless liberal. He touches on a liberal idea that peoeole get robbed and attacked because the criminals are feeling victimized and are grappling with poverty. Liberals can’t get their arms around these knockout games. They can’t understand someone committing crimes for no reason. To liberals there must be some underlying reason such as poverty to explain crime.
Punishment for the impertinence of using the wrong letter at the end of his name. This ba$tard has been screwing up things starting with hospital birth records, then school attendance lists, has made life a living Hell for the post office, and will be the bane of Google obituary searches through time. Siphoned off any money from a trust fund? Slept with anybodies wife lately? The possibilities are myriad, including: Are you a lawyer? Obviously nobody was trying to rob the guy, as they were perfectly satisfied with bitch-stomping him. My money is on he pissd off somebody.

Perhaps the plan was to beat him unconscious then rob him. They may have gotten interrupted mid-plan or simply spooked by something and left him.
