Demise of Southern democrat is now nearly complete

After President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, he reportedly told a fellow Democrat that the party had lost the South for a long time to come. It took more than a generation for old Southern loyalties to the Democrats to fade, but that vision was realized this weekend.

As Mary Landrieu, a Democratic senator from Louisiana, lost re-election in Saturday’s runoff election, as expected, the Republicans vanquished the last vestige of Democratic strength in the once solidly Democratic Deep South. In a region stretching from the high plains of Texas to the Atlantic coast of the Carolinas, Republicans control not only every Senate seat, but every governor’s mansion and every state legislative body.

And they still held a majority as recently as a decade ago. Ms. Landrieu’s defeat essentially marked an end to the era of the Southern Democrats: the conservative, Southern, white officials, supported by white Southerners, whose conflicted views helped define American politics for half a century.

This is no surprise or mystery to those of us who are born and bred Southerners. The extreme left wing social issues championed by the Democrats are alien to this region. The catastrophic Obama administration and its near complete destruction of race relations in this country have only been the latest dagger in the backs of traditional minded Southerners and Americans. This Georgian says goodbye and good riddance to the Democrats. You brought this on yourselves and have only your policies to blame. You made the South your whipping boy for years and now payback is a .........

The only Rat holdouts in the South are liberal cities like Atlanta, Nashville, Miami, and Memphis. Practically the rest of the entire South is conservative.

Not sure I know exactly what that means but since it’s from the nyslimes I’m pretty sure it’s a slam at the Right.

After President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, he reportedly told a fellow Democrat that the party had lost the South for a long time to come.

What??? He said the exact opposite.

Well, what he said was he'd have blacks voting DemocRAT for the next hundred years. Although he didn't use the word "blacks". He used a much more vulgar term. A term that only blacks and dead white West Virginia Senators can use.

From my perspective, the classical of the white southern Democrat is one rooted in a long history. One that is not being replenished with same. Democrats are trying to continue to enslave white southerners into the entitlement plantation, and they are having some success with SNAP, section 8, etc. But it still isn’t enough. Their more aged traditional white Democrats are dying and not being replaced with the same kind of people, frankly.

Georgia Democrats tried to relive some of that old glory with the nomination of Sam Nunn’s daughter and Jimmy Carter’s grandson. They were both soundly defeated without any runoffs.

The new Democrats that the DNC has been able to sway to the dark side are more self-involved, don’t work and are petulant - their capricious needs have to be continually satisfied or roused to action by increasingly more absurd warnings. And, it just doesn’t seem to work that well any more.

Florida is the only state where you have to go North to get to the South.

Then again, in some areas you have liberal Democrats masquerading as Republicans. Being a member of the GOP does not necessarily equate to being conservative.

Yup. And while it's not really part of the South anymore, VA has two Dem Senators. Then MO is south of the M-D Line, and half-what considered southern. And they're split 1-1.

I think if the 2014 mid-terms showed us anything, it’s that the weakness at the polls for Democrats is a nationwide phenomenon. Allowing liberals to portray this as just a southern thing enables them to imply that racism is the reason.

It’s clearly not. Just a southern thing, that is.

Blacks pretty much stayed home everywhere they live. Dems lost a big portion of the young vote, and they live all over. Women moved our way, or stayed home. Formerly staunch Dem party constituencies have all been de-energized. Though we didn’t win as much in the mid-west and the west, those regions also displayed Dem party weakness.

It’s the issues, the failed ideology, not the demographics, IMHO.

It would be a sarcastic note, if not accurate for any number of reasons, to refer to Mary Landrieu as “The Last Dixiecrat”.

The purpose of doing this is that it would make Democrats froth and spew, again, for any number of reasons.

For those two young to remember, the Dixiecrats were a short-lived segregationist faction within the Democrat party. Existing only a single year, 1948, as such, they were loud and boisterous racists.

Importantly, though their movement folded, only one of them, Strom Thurmond, every stopped being a Democrat and became a Republican. The rest remained in the Democrat party until their dying days.

However, the racism they promulgated still remains within the Democrat party, even if the direction of its hate has turned 180 degrees, so it is now racist blacks hating whites.

So perhaps it would be more accurate to refer to Mary Landrieu as “The Last Neo-Dixiecrat”.
