Today I Stopped Caring
NYC Fire Wire ^ | 12/7/2014 | Lt. Daniel Furseth

Posted on 12/09/2014 5:51:29 AM PST by Fester Chugabrew

Today, I stopped caring about my fellow man. I stopped caring about my community, my neighbors, and those I serve. I stopped caring today because a once noble profession has become despised, hated, distrusted, and mostly unwanted.

I stopped caring today because parents refuse to teach their kids right from wrong and blame us when they are caught breaking the law. I stopped caring today because parents tell their little kids to be good or “the police will take you away” embedding a fear from year one. Moms hate us in their schools because we frighten them and remind them of the evil that lurks in the world.

They would rather we stay unseen, but close by if needed, but readily available to “fix their kid.” I stopped caring today because we work to keep our streets safe from mayhem in the form of reckless, drunk, high, or speeding drivers, only to be hated for it, yet hated even more because we didn’t catch the drunk before he killed someone they may know.

Nevertheless, we are just another tool used by government to generate “revenue.” I stopped caring today because Liberals hate the police as we carry guns, scare kids, and take away their drugs. We always kill innocent people with unjust violence. We are called bullies for using a Taser during a fight, but are condemned further for not first tasing the guy who pulls a gun on us.

And if we do have to shoot, we are asked “why didn’t you just shoot the gun out of their hand?” And when one of us is killed by the countless attacks that do happen (but are rarely reported in the mainstream media) the haters say, “Its just part of the job.” I stopped caring today because Conservatives hate us as we are “the Government.” We try to take away their guns, freedoms, and liberty at every turn.

We represent a “Police State” where “jackbooted badge-wearing thugs” randomly attack innocent people without cause or concern for constitutional rights. We are Waco, Ruby Ridge, and Rodney King all rolled into one lone police officer stopping to help change an old lady’s tire. I stopped caring today as no one wants us around, but instantly demands answers, results, arrests, when a crime takes place.

If a crime isn’t solved within the allocated 60 minutes it takes CSI on television, we are inept, incompetent, or covering something up. If we do get “lucky” it was just that and everyone with a Facebook account can post wonderful comments of how “they” would solve the case and how “we” are not nearly as clever.

I stopped caring today because a video of a cop six states away, from a department that you never heard of, screws up and forgets his oath of honor, thus firing up an internet lynch-mob of cop haters even though 99% of us work twice as hard not to end up in the news and to still be “the good guys.” We are “militarized” because we wear body armor and kevlar helmets when shots are fired or rocks thrown at us and carry scary looking rifles even though everyone knows that they are easier to shoot and are more accurate than a handgun or a shotgun.

I stopped caring today because the culture of today’s instantly connected youth is only there to take and never give back. To never accept responsibility for ones actions, but to blame everyone else instead of themselves. To ask “what is in it for me?” versus “what can I do for you?”

To idolize gangsters, thugs, sexually promiscuous behavior, and criminals over hard work, dedication, and achievement. To argue that getting stoned should be a right, yet getting a job or an education is a hassle. To steal versus earn. To hate versus help. Yes, I stopped caring today. But tomorrow, I will put my uniform back on and I will care again.

We are crime free because we are a community that keeps an on each other. We talk to strangers in the neighborhood. We are families that have fathers. Our children are not saints, but they stay in line. They graduate. They excel in sports. WE are involved.

The police are pretty good about rousting the kids parties. But they are also great at speeding tickets, donut sales, and hassling people for no reason, except they are bored.

I got stopped turning onto my street. Evidently the cop turned onto the main street right behind me, and because I turned as he pulled behind behind, he thought I was drunk(?)

When he pulled the car over and saw a 50 something guy, obviously on my way back from work (the car was full of cameras and lighting equipment) he back peddled so fast he almost fell over.

But, I was subjected to the cop pulling me over on my street—full lights and siren at 2 AM—and having him stand by my window with his hand on his weapon. I was asked where I had been, where I was going, and if I had been drinking.

Instead, I asked him why he stopped me. He told me because I turned in front of him. I asked him if he stopped everyone who turned while in front of him.

There was not explanation, no apology, not even a good night.

The distrust of the police is not due to them killing unarmed black kids after an altercation. The distrust of the police is because too many of them have acted in ways that do not generate a feeling of trust.

We always kill innocent people with unjust violence.

not always--but yes, sometimes you do... sometimes you reveal to us that you know not one thing about the Constitution... sometimes you step on the rights of those you are to protect and serve... get over yourself... don't act like every single law enforcement officer is good... you know there are some who are guilty of the very things you have written about... some people do have good reason to be afraid of some of you...

Maybe it is crime free because of them?

Maybe it's crime free because they're not criminals

You are a scum bag rebel.

The cops in Central VA are worse. I get stopped EVERY time I drive through that hell hole. I always drive the speed limit, I always stop completely. I hardly ever turn right on red there. 8 trips through your Sh!t hole state in the last three years. Got stopped, and let go five times—every time down, and once on the way back.

So, its not a local issue. Its a general issue with police all over the country.

In any other country, this would have led to a rebellion by now. Well, you all know that doesnt work.

The Policeman’s Benevolent Association (union) is why we can’t boot them!

It took decades of the police treating the public they work for like an enemy, for the public to get annoyed with the cops. The public is sick of paying to be unceasingly harassed by your ilk.

You guys made this bed for yourselves. Deal with it. Perhaps obeying the laws you enforce on us yourselves would be a good start

When police stop seizing property with out due process, when they stop giving tickets for BS infractions simply because they can’t find anything serious, when they stop hassleing law abiding citizens for merely excersizing thier rights, I will start caring about you LT.

It isn’t just a few cops, it is ingrained in your training. The cops who don’t do it, need to stand up and stop the a-hole cops who do.

When you stop the US vs THEM mentality. I will care.

It isn’t the citizens. It is the courts and politicians who make it more difficult for you to do your job. Yet you take it out on the citizens.

Luckily, where I live, you cannot come busting down doors without a warrant. You cannot come seize property without due process. But that is just a signature away unless we stay alert.

So LT if you took an oath and want to stand by your oath, then stand up and stop your fellows from breaking theirs.

Did you read all the way to the end?

His points are valid, insofar as he recognizes an increase in disrespect for the law, beginning with lazy parents. The sword bearer is given for those who despise lawful authority. Lawful authority begins with parents, whose authority is ultimately bestowed by God.

Obama could step in and calm things down but he would rather stir the pot of racial animosity.

Trying to remember my last positive experience with police... Still trying... Still trying...

Nope. I can’t recall one. I have never been arrested or convicted of a crime and haven’t had a traffic ticket since 1982, but I haven’t run into a pleasant police officer in recent memory. They all seem to have an us against them attitude.

How can your local petty tyrant, chief of police, require anything beyond the state requirements?

We expect more than police can reasonably deliver.

Realistically, how much crime do police actually prevent from happening? I think not much. This makes sense because they cannot be everywhere at once.

So they mostly show up after a crime or other problem has already happened.

People need to be aware that they are more on their own than they realize. The police are not your personal bodyguards and they cannot change the culture of the area you live in if you live in a bad area. That is your job, should you decide to accept it.

"Maybe it is crime free because of them?"

Umm.... No...

It was also relatively 'crime free' when there was only like, 4 or 5 cops here when I was a kid.

Because in the people’s republic of Massachusetts the local chief is given the ultimate authority in the issuance of the permits.

MA is a may issue, not shall issue state.

And if the police did a better job stopping crime and fostering an organized environment...

Wow. Fascist much?

That's what the Nazis did.

The truth is that society is collapsing. There's really not much the police can do if we still want to maintain our freedoms. We have choices--freedom or fascism/safety. You can't--practically--have both.

Since our society has decided to kick God our of our public lives (school, gov't,courts, etc), we are circling the drain. We cannot be safe in an amoral society.
