(CNSNews.com) - Speaking at a "college opportunity summit" on Thursday, First Lady Michelle Obama described "two worlds" of college-bound students:
"[T]he fact is that right now, a small number of students are getting every advantage in the college admissions race, while millions of other students who are just as talented can't even begin to compete."
Mrs. Obama was making a pitch for expanded college counseling. She said too many students go through school without any real guidance on how to get into college or how to pay for it.
She described one world, where students "don't know what classes to take, or how to prepare for the SAT or the ACT. No one helps them decide which colleges to apply to. No one reviews the their applications. And plenty of kids have no idea that they're eligible for financial aid, so they assume they just can't afford college, and they don't even bother to apply.

And there are days I feel every bit of it.
To give you an idea of how much times have changed, I actually married a Democrat. Of course, that's what all the nice Irish Catholic girls were back in the day. (Fortunately, I married a sensible woman who abandoned the Democrats decades ago when they took up babykilling as their national pastime).
I wish she would go back to whatever world she came from.
“...while millions of other students who are just as talented can’t even begin to compete.”
Maybe because they are on starvation rations?
I’m gonna get burned for this...but she makes better sense on this college counseling issue then she ever did with the school lunch program. Though I would take a more conservative approach: No...you are not college material but you repair cars like a champ; here is some funding for trade school...OR....Yes you are college material...your science scores are outstanding...here are ways we can get you in.
Another words, higher educaton needs to be reworked including accepting of the notion that some are not college material but that doesn’t mean they can’t have a useful life or even ...run for office someday! As for higher education...it needs to be organized the same way that the government is tasked to provide constitutionally mandated services! Like roads, post office, military, college prep should also be seen as a constitutional priority...but not given away willy nilly.
We need higher education trained persons to help the nation survive as a nation....but perhaps not so many lawyers and “artists”. I think college should be free for those who are suited for it but strictly coded for the types of graduates needed for the good and goals of the nation. There need not be an abandonment of free market principles... if someone not suitably “tracked” for college really wants to go to college, maybe take a few courses that he or she finds an interest in...they can pay for it as budget and the market will allow but not with taxpayer funded grants and loans.
You mean like when one guy was given 10 talents and one guy 5 talents and one guy 1 talent?
Dear Mrs. Obama..

Every high school I know of has a counselor on staff. If these kids don’t know how to take the SAT or fill out an application, whose fault is THAT?
When I applied to college, my mother had just died a year before and my father was distant and pretty uninvolved unless it involved what I was going to cook him for dinner. I figured out how to take the college boards and how to apply to colleges on my own without the aid of a counselor or even a computer and e-mail ( 1989) She is just looking for ways to get more young people indebted to the government.
Also she lies ( what else is new) All high school students are not “equally talented”. Total BS.
When my daughter went to a private women’s college, we paid. But she had a classmate who had a full ride scholarship. And her mother was going to transfer her welfare benefits to live near her daughter.
TV show “The Middle” which stars Patricia Heaton had a funny episode this week where the daughter accidentally marked her collegs apps “Native American” and the schools were treating her like royalty until they found out.
Blacks dropout more than they graduate, so I don’t want to hear they don’t have opportunities because they don’t want them.
Not just any counseling will do: preferably a counselor steeped in Marx and Alinsky from the Black Studies Department.
The Bible does transcend generations..
Oh yes. Another war is looming. The war on Nature. Natural selection can't be allowed to interfere with the First Sasquatch's view of the universe.
Nature never allowed me to get a $40,000,000 basketball contract; too short, arms not long enough. Can't jump worth beans.
And then there's' my weight; Never weighed over 160 my entire life!
can't bully anybody! Can't throw my weight around!!! Can't resist arrest!
Where's the fairness in that?!
All together now...
Can't Jump!
Can't resist arrest!
Can't have that!
Equal access to professional sports now!!
Can't Jump!
Can't Jump!
Can't resist arrest!
Can't Jump!
Can't resist arrest!
Can't Jump!
Can't resist arrest!
You need to use the 8’ hoop like I do :-)
There.
fixed it.
Hey Michelle, how do I find a Saudi prince to give me $20 million so I can go to Harvard Law?
I suggest that all of us who are disqualified from muti-million dollar professional sports contracts due to our physical attributes, organize for national protests.
Let's all me in the suburbs and burn down our houses and businesses to show how unfair this is.
