(CNSNews.com) - Speaking at a "college opportunity summit" on Thursday, First Lady Michelle Obama described "two worlds" of college-bound students:
"[T]he fact is that right now, a small number of students are getting every advantage in the college admissions race, while millions of other students who are just as talented can't even begin to compete."
Mrs. Obama was making a pitch for expanded college counseling. She said too many students go through school without any real guidance on how to get into college or how to pay for it.
She described one world, where students "don't know what classes to take, or how to prepare for the SAT or the ACT. No one helps them decide which colleges to apply to. No one reviews the their applications. And plenty of kids have no idea that they're eligible for financial aid, so they assume they just can't afford college, and they don't even bother to apply.

Why not just do another "First Lady Executive Order" like your school lunch program?
just combine the two!
them them nibble on some broccoli you allotted them while you tell them how they can borrow 100’s of thousands for a useless degree in African or Womens studies!
Higher Edumacation is way overpriced, full of useless courses and needs reformation.
Can’t Moochelle just shut up and go away? Please???
“Mrs. Obama was making a pitch for expanded college counseling”
My kids had two dedicated full time counselors. Worked for them...
“”don’t know what classes to take, or how to prepare for the SAT or the ACT. No one helps them decide which colleges to apply to. No one reviews the their applications. And plenty of kids have no idea that they’re eligible for financial aid, so they assume they just can’t afford college, and they don’t even bother to apply.”
So there is actually free money for these kids. It’s just they don’t bother to find it.
I guess some people need help from the government to wipe their butts from the government too.
She should know, because her daughters are getting the Luxury Class Education at Sidwell Friends .complete with a world class chef, instead of the meager lunches she has punished the poor children with during her reign as Cafeteria Czar.
Right. She needs to put her kids in the nearest government run school. And insist that they eat one of her prescribed lunches.
Didn’t Michelle go to Princeton?
Doesn’t that make her one of the “small number” who are “getting every advantage?”
Typical paternalistic, we-know-what’s-best-for-you liberalism.
From my perspective, Michelle, too many students get Ivy League educations and couldn’t find their ass with both hands and a map. Your husband is definitely at the head of the class.
You prepare by working hard and getting good marks in grades 1-12. Do that any you'll have no trouble getting acceptable scores on your SAT or ACT.
“[T]he fact is that right now, a small number of students are getting every advantage in the college admissions race” = Affirmative Action
“while millions of other students who are just as talented can’t even begin to compete.” = Victims of Affirmative Action
Wow, what an admission about her two girls!
Why can't this woman just shut up?
Rosalyn Carter never bothered me. At least not that I can remember. Ladybird Johnson, nope, not her either. Jackie Kennedy? Kind of aristocratic and her voice bugged me a bit but at least she was a pretty gal.
But Mrs. Obama? She just needs to shut up and stop telling the world how to eat and how to think and how to raise their children.
Sidwell.
Exactly right. Its almost as if the university system is structured primarily to perpetuate the growth of the college itself and secondarily to inculcate certain political philosophies rather than emphasizing critical thinking skills. ;)
Uh, Michelle? They’re called “guidance counsellors.” Many are absolutely terrible at their job, but hiring two terrible people to do the work that one is too incompetent to do won’t help.
Is there ever a time when these two aren’t trying to divide us by race and class?
