Even the world's most hard-core, fire-breathing conservatives have me baffled. I'll paraphrase John Stossel in harsher language than he used (no conservative he, but he did address the issue) "If you use the term 'African American' you are either gutless or stupid. Gutless because you are afraid to "offend" those looking to be offended, stupid because you've not stopped to ask yourself what the hell this new term is all about."
Why do SO MANY conservatives, even here on this site and even Rush Limbaugh, use this term?
Blacks invented the term to wield power over nonblacks. If I force you to call me by some regal-sounding, magisterial title with 10,000 syllables, then I am wielding power over you. Period.
On the day that I demand to be called a European American of Caucasoid Descent with Scotch/Irish Roots (Roots? Get it? That's funny!) then I'll start using the AA term.
Just how low must you bow when using the term AA, and are you allowed to look the AA in the face when speaking to him?
I mean, I do realize that "they" were surveying the building sites of the pyramids they built from the gliders they invented thousands of years ago, while lowly whites were still stabbing each other over grubs in the forest, but come on!
So what do they call blacks in Canada?
They weren’t.
Or if you run across a black guy with a heavy Jamaican accent... “African American”
FYI: I have let all of my associates know that I find being called an African-American offensive. I’ve never been to Africa (and have no intention of going anytime soon).
I also believe the first steps to fixing that community (from which I came from) is to STOP calling themselves African whatever, because it places your ancestry before your nationality.
I should be the opposite. I am a native-born American, therefore no need to identify my ancestry.
Morgan Freeman doesn’t like to be called African American.
“African?-American... hell no... I was born in Memphis. I’m just plain ole American. How many black Americans just like me were actually born in Africa? We are just regular Americans.”
Most of them are from the caribbean islands.
I call myself an All American Mutt -— that’s “mutt” with two t’s, to make it more “elegant” . . .
Where have all the Negroes gone?
That would explain the plethora of hang gliding negro architects in Africa wouldn't it?
Pathetic peoples with pathetic lies. None of em have ever been to Africa, nor ever will!
Why is it that “people of color” is politically correct, but “colored people” is not?
Is it inserting the word “of” that makes all the difference? Does that mean I can call illegal aliens “backs of wet” and be ok?
Rather than Potato Head I prefer Dike Jumper or Windmill Winder.
THAT was hilarious!
I don’t know.
All I know is slavery turned out to be pretty bad practice to begin with.
Had slavery not been introduced into this country we wouldn’t have many of these problems to begin with.
We’ve got a department in our company so full of Americans of Polish descent that we simply refer to it as “the ski lodge.”
No one is as insistent as I am about hammering out common vocabulary before a debate begins. Someone asks "do you believe in God?" -- I have to ask them what they mean by God, and I refuse to settle for "you know what I mean..." Because, I only know what I mean by the Word, so to speak. I have to qualify any answer with "the God of Abraham," for example, or "Father of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ," say.
These sorts of debates can be useful or they can run square into the law of diminishing returns. We have to pick our fights.
The difference between negro and black doesn't exist, insofar as the very purpose of words is concerned. Words define out what is from what it is not, and these two words are colors, negro being more specific as to 'dark' and darker and 'black' being absence of light, or completely dark. But at their root, one word is Spanish the other is English. But...
(Buzzer Sounds)
Time's up.
:)
I prefer “Blackened Americans”. Makes them sound yummy, like some cajun chicken dish.
Negroes.
POC? I don’t understand. Piece of what?
The City of Philadelphia- hmmm, is that near Phiwwy?
