After security researcher Jeffrey Paul upgraded the operating system on his MacBook Pro last week, he discovered that several of his personal files had found a new home on the cloud. The computer had saved the files, which Paul thought resided only on his own encrypted hard drive, to a remote server that Apple controls.
This is unacceptable, thundered Paul, an American based in Berlin, on his personal blog a few days later. Apple has taken local files on my computer not stored in iCloud and silently and without my permission uploaded them to their servers across all applications, Apple and otherwise.
He was not alone in either his frustration or surprise. Johns Hopkins University cryptographer Matthew Green tweeted his dismay after realizing that some private notes had found their way to iCloud. Bruce Schneier, another prominent cryptography expert, wrote a blog post calling the automatic saving function both dangerous and poorly documented by Apple.
The criticism was all the more notable because its target, Apple, had just enjoyed weeks of applause within the computer security community for releasing a bold new form of smartphone encryption capable of thwarting government searches even when police have warrants. Yet here was an awkward flip side: Police still can gain access to files stored on cloud services, and Apple seemed determined to migrate more and more data to them.
The once-clear line between devices such as Macs or iPhones and proprietary cloud services is all but vanishing, security experts warn. And it isnt just Apple doing it. Microsoft, Google and others are increasingly relying on cheap, easily accessible storage capacity to roll out new features for customers. Apples automatic saving function allows users to switch seamlessly between devices, without fear of losing documents or edits.

Oh hell, someone criticized the God Apple. ...INCOMING!!!!!
Don’t worry, the host of Apple defenders will come to this thread to defend her.
FUD is their battle cry !
I showed the thread they went off on a few days back to a few non freepers. A good time was had by all. Some of them were impressed with the fanaticism too!
You willingly share your computer files up to some big corporation and then you are surprised because your files are out there? What do these morons expect?

Got a linky dink?
Search Swordmaker’s post history about 3-5 days back. I don’t have the link handy but it is worth it. Very entertaining. Not a single criticzm backed up by personal experiences from multiple sources was accepted as factual.
Not one.
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
Yes, I am going to call FUD, on this. He could have not activated it at startup of OS X.10 Yosemite, it was a CHOICE HE MADE, if he did not want his files backed up on his own iCloud account or shared to his iPhone or iPad. Again, this is absurd. . . STUPID.
If your files are out there, they are randomized, anonymized, and 256 bit encrypted. Even Apple cannot decrypt them. What have you got to worry about? That was why the government is so upset. Apple told them to go pound sand when they asked for access.
Thank you for your constant efforts to stop these besotted haters. I am so tired of seeing them crop up like mushrooms after a long rain.
Right now, they seem to me to be the Freeper equivalent of Jon Gruber - (or gorillas - throwing up any dust they can to obfuscate whatever agenda they might have).
Such a waste of time, for we Freepers are not that stupid, and their efforts would be better used elsewhere. Just my opinion, of course and as usual.
Now that doesn't seem obsessive or fanatical on your part at all. That combined with your certain arrival and compulsive agitating on any and all Apple threads. Nope, nothing odd about you at all.
Or is it just being petty, rude, and mean-spirited that gives you that good time feeling inside?
Nice dodge. Didn’t tough anything I said though.
You know, I would not really care how good they munged the data. If I say make that file GONE, I want it GONE. Even if tomorrow someone grabs my machine.
Not dodging anything you said. Questioning your peculiar behavior of getting such a kick out of being a disruptor and intentional irritant. Why do you act this way over someone’s preference of computer?
I think it's time to diagnose the people obsessively post this stuff, don't you? I do.
Swordmaker's and Kathy's proposed diagnosis for the new ICD-10 addenda:
90210 iOS Munchausen's Apple-Plexy Syndrome (MAPS), The overwhelming compulsion to post negative, judgmental, aggressive, and false commentary on any website thread related to Apple products wherever found, including phobic reaction to projected Apple user euphoria. First and subsequent encounters.
I think some persons on this thread, whom I shall not name due to HIPAA regulations, but who will no doubt demonstrate themselves to be sufferers of this syndrome, certainly meet this MAPS diagnosis.
No problem. It would be gone. . . and you could do it from your iPhone or iPad. Apple uses military grade deletions. Try that if they had your computer and you no longer had possession. Of course, if you used a good passcode and 256 bit AES encryption, they'd have a hell of a time getting at it, no matter where you put it. Although it would be overkill, Apple allows everyone of the 227 characters available on the keyboard to be used in their passcode and the passcode can be 256 characters long. That means the possible combinations of your Apple iCloud COULD be one of something under (because you can't have two of the same characters side-by-side) 227256 combinations. I wouldn't want to try and remember a passcode that long. . . but you could if you want to.
Cryptographers tell us that to break such an encryption, assuming making 50 attempts per second, the amount of time to break in would exceed the time left before the Universe dies from heat death. Oh, did I mention, you get locked out after five failed attempts?
Apple then takes YOUR encrypted data which uses your personal key, anonymizes it, and then adds ANOTHER level of 256 bit encryption on top of that, using THEIR KEY, breaks it into smaller batches, uses a algorithm to randomly store your data along with other user's encrypted data, in their own and leased data farms. IF the government demands the data, all they get is piles of encrypted gobbledygook, that may or may not include your encrypted gobbledygook. Without your key, they have no way of knowing what's in it.
Absolutely! And that is just brilliant and should be on all Apple threads. Just brilliant. Still laughing.
Sword maker Is there an issue with iCloud drive? Are my private - only on my local computer files - now on iCloud?
If they are how do I find and move them or delete them from iCloud? Or better yet how do I change my settings so that any auto save is only local?
