Left-leaning "friends" on social media (Vanity)

Posted on 10/30/2014 1:42:52 PM PDT by Tired of Taxes

On social media websites, how do you handle "friends" with completely different political viewpoints?

Suppose you want to keep in contact with family members. So you sign up for Facebook. Almost all of your "friends" are relatives. Some are Republicans, others Democrats. You love them all.

But your news feed shows their "likes" and their comments on many different issues. And some "friends" go to extremes, even using profanity and insulting conservatives.

Do you "like" the comments you agree with and ignore the ones you oppose? (This is what I've been doing so far.)

Or do you jump into every discussion and argue for your side on the issues?

Or do you pick and choose which discussions to jump into?

Or do you ignore your friend's "likes" and just "share" your own counter-"likes"?

Or do you simply "un-friend" the people who go so far to the left that they're obnoxious?

What do you do?

Unfollow the leftists and create a list of sane friends you can share interesting and important things with. No sense in getting into flame wars at this point, especially with family.

Tell them the truth, until they “unfriend” you. It might sink in!

I “un-friend” them, not only on Facebook but in real life too, even if they are family. I don’t need their kind of BS in my life.

Too many low info voters do not know the other side to any political disagreement, and if we don’t tell them, they never will.

Provided your post doesn't get pulled as offensive because some anti-freedom weenie complained!

Don’t use the FB you’ve set up to connect with family and friends for politics. In the end, it’s just not worth it.

You can always create a second FB account for that purpose and to post comments in places that require it.

“Or do you ignore your friend’s “likes” and just “share” your own counter-”likes”? “

Easy ! Why make a big deal out of this?

This is kind of funny because a thread was pulled but not because of my comment, but theirs. Someone on a decorating forum started a thread about the rep. primaries and who did they want to win. Now since the bulk of them were leftists, they had the usual answers. I was on topic and polite and said that I was supporting Newt since my gal Sarah chose not to run, but, boy I had my fingers crossed she would change her mind. I knew this would make their little heads explode and it did. After the first nasty comment to me, I responded that I was so thankful for that quick rebuke since I bet my husband it would only take 5 min. for a snarky response, and it took less than 2. After that it really went downhill. The next day the thread was gone. I contacted the moderator, she was very clear it was not because of my comment but rather theirs.

I guess what I am talking about is saying the very simple, non aggressive statements, that you know will push buttons. They expose themselves to all the people who are not political and make themselves look like bullies.

I have had some old friends contact me through Facebook that didn’t know how else to get a hold of me. So it was good.

You don’t have to un-friend them, just stop following them. Otherwise, my suggestion is to avoid engaging in political discussion on social media sites. Nobody is going to be persuaded to change their point of view. Remarking is just self-indulgent “venting.”

I consider an opportunity. I also consider it stupid to share personal information or pictures of family on social media because you never know who is lurking in the shadows.

I’ve been attacked and threatened for my political opinions by unions and political activists, and posting my opinions on social media is my way of getting back at them and reinforcing my opinions.

If you cannot counter their comments succinctly then just ignore or block them.

I've too often caught right meaning folks giving leftists more fodder to bash conservatives with by making angry, ill-conceived, or incorrect statements.

I like what I agree with, and share it. I jump into many controversies, but not all. (But then, I enjoy debate and I can give as good as I get.) And I overload them with links and evidence.

Then they tell me, “It doesn’t matter how much evidence you produce or how many links you post, you’re wrong.” (One liberal friend actually wrote that. Word for word.)

I don’t do Facebook either, and I don’t “tweet”. There’s just not enough time for that stuff; and from what I’ve seen it isn’t worth the trouble.

But that’s just me...

On facebook I’m “friends” with a guy I used to work with years ago. I always liked him a lot and he’s a very active poster.

Some things we totally agree on, for examples, puppies and kitties and esp. black kitties. By total coincidence we both even have cats with the same name.

But politically he is a complete lefty idiot.

What I do is just ignore his lefty posts, for the most part.

But what does amuse me is sometimes I’ll get the exact same post from him and from my right-wing friends.

It makes me think that an anti-corruption 3rd party might have a chance.

I have my brother on “silent” on Facebook. He’s a regurgitater of the Democrat Narrative.

I have a good friend who is a massive liberal, actually famous for it as she is an internet pioneer. I love reading her stuff because she is genuine. She busts on Obama all the time.
