On Tuesday, Slate and everyone else posted a video of a woman who is harassed more than 100 times by men as she walks around New York City for ten hours. More specifically, it’s a video of a young white woman who is harassed by mostly black and Latino men as she walks around New York City for ten hours. The one dude who turns around and says, “Nice,” is white, but the guys who do the most egregious things—like the one who harangues her, “Somebody’s acknowledging you for being beautiful! You should say thank you more,” or the one who follows her down the street too closely for five whole minutes—are not.

Born and bred in the Northeast although never spent time in areas with large NAM populations but the incident I described was the only one I ever observed. If this woman walked Manhattan below 125th St she would not get catcalled just white guys giving a second look.
Ah, yes, a time honored tradition of following her down the street. These guys are white. Nobody got mad at them, and still appreciate their efforts to this day.

Really, I think the guy who said she should be appreciative tht someone was paying her a compliment had a point.
What the woman is wearing is immaterial. I’ve been catcalled while wearing a thick winter coat that covered me from chin to mid calf, and knee high boots beneath it. I’ve been catcalled dressed up, and dressed down. Some areas of town, you never get catcalled (unless there’s construction going on); other areas, the only women who don’t get catcalled are the young and the elderly.
It’s not really a compliment when it happens to any female walking by in the right age range. Many women see it as some weird male bonding ritual that has nothing to do with them as a person.
Yeah, she ain't exactly the next Kate Upton by any stretch.

In the old days, it was only construction workers and only a wolf whistle. Groups of men just were not on the street hanging around because loitering laws were enforced; thus, women were safe on the street.

Follow these rules:
1. Be handsome
2. Be attractive
3. Don't be unattractive
If you walk by a dog pen, don’t be surprised if you get barked at.
I can see how she would be insulted. I would think the only type of woman who would respond favorably to that sort of treatment would *tend* to be a woman with rather low expectations. So, it’s as if these guys are saying, “Hi, I think you may have low enough values to tolerate my uncouth jackassery to where you might sleep with me.”
There are ways of “pitching woo” that are less insulting. These guys simply don’t have any skills.
As for the way she’s dressed, she is dressed modestly. Maybe not modestly enough for the Taliban or the Amish, but by most reasonably accepted standards, she’s modestly dressed. She’s not smiling or flirting; she’s just getting where she’s going.
Bottom line: It’s a “gotcha” game where (like I said) she walks past every dog-pen she can find because she *knows* (just like we all should know) that those “dogs” are going to be true to their raising and “bark” at her.

We could have told her this would happen if she had just laid her cards on the table up front. We could have saved her all the shoe leather!
As far as I’m concerned, this is much ado about a contrived street performance with some unwitting players who can be counted on to take the bait.
Notice at the 50 second mark on the video the 5 minute guy has to turn around to comment. The “hired catcaller” is ahead of her so can’t see her or can evaluate her lack of hotness. That right there proves this was all faked. I bet most of those blurred out cast of characters were used over and over in her little show.
She’s far from all that and a bag of chips. Well, looks like she’s had more than her share of bags of chips.
The truth is that white males used to cat-call in the 1950s and 1960s (the cat-calling construction worker was a stereotype, in fact).
But since the war on white men took off in the 1970s, we’ve learned to keep our mouths shut.
P.S. I was never a cat-caller. There is such thing as class, after all.
