Marianna High School graduate Lamar Wilson will be in Jackson County this weekend to make a symbolic gesture he hopes will stir a spirit of atonement here for a tragedy that played out 80 years ago, culminating a gruesome scene on Jackson Courthouse square. Claude Neal was murdered on Oct. 26, 1934, in a mob attack and subsequently lynched, already dead, from a tree on the Jackson Courthouse square.
Wilson explained in a summary of the historic event that he believes it is being swept under and forgotten by todays generations and that young people of the future may never realize it happened and therefore never learn from it. That, he believes, is a tragedy in itself.
Neal was a black man accused of killing and raping a white woman who lived near him.

We all agree that mob justice is immoral, but I wonder if the guilt or innocence of Claude Neal matters at all to this kid?
I'm sure there's a clearly innocent lynching victim he could celebrate.

One doesn't need to go back 80 years to find murder cases that have been swept under the rug.

Your point is exceedingly transparent.
I fail to see it.

If he was dead before the lynching, does it count as a lynching ?

Does a black Republican count? Considering the politics of the time if he had been permitted to register and vote the black lynched would undoubtedly have been a Republican and every member of the lynch mob a proud Democrat. Jim Crow, you know. In terms of symbolic lynchings such as Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas there are ample examples in just the past twenty or so years.

There were quite a few Republicans lynched by the pro-slavery Democrats in the South. And, I don’t understand your remark,,,, but I’m significantly compromised by oral surgery, and further complications, so,,,,,, I ain’t up to snuff this evening,,,,,,,,

Neal didn’t live long enough for a trial. The vigilantes thought he was guilty. The article doesn’t say why. The victim was dead.
They went to a lot of trouble to travel into Alabama and re-capture Neal, beat him to death, then bring him back to where the crime took place, and hang his body.
I get their message. I also get the message that this “running the path,” sends.

Take good care of them! I have all my life, but it hasn’t mattered! Welsh teeth. Problems started when I was 12. I’m 68 in a couple of days. Teeth can make one miserable!
