Junior Johnson to drive pace car at Martinsville: One of the most successful and iconic drivers in the history of NASCAR will be back behind the wheel for Sunday's Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500 at Martinsville Speedway. And, as he was most of his career, he will be leading the pack. Junior Johnson, a charter member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame and winner of 50 Sprint Cup races, will be the honorary pace car driver for Sunday's Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500. Johnson recorded two wins and eight top-five finishes in just 19 starts at Martinsville Speedway. In a short career Johnson had 50 Sprint Cup wins and 121 top-five finishes. He retired suddenly in 1966 when he was just 35 years old and turned his efforts to fielding cars for other drivers. In 31 years as a car owner, he notched 139 wins and picked up six NASCAR Sprint Cup championships.(

Drivers' meeting at Martinsville to be held on pit road: Whether it's before the race or during it, Martinsville Speedway prides itself on getting fans as close to the action as possible and the Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500 on Oct. 26 will be no exception. In an effort to give fans more access than ever before, the historic half-mile track is moving the drivers' meeting to pit road, just inside turn four. "Our number one goal is to make sure the fans have the best experience possible when they come to a race here," said Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell. "They've grown accustomed to feeling a part of the action during the race and now, by getting a view of what goes on in the drivers' meeting, they will feel a part of what goes on before the race as well." Fans who have added the Green Flag Experience to their ticket package will be able to be on the track, while the drivers' meeting takes place. In addition to being on pit road, the drivers' meeting will be broadcast live on SprintVision.(

Richard Petty named Grand Marshal at Martinsville: They say the best relationships are formed over time, and two of the longest in NASCAR are the ones Richard Petty has formed with Goody's and Martinsville Speedway. The three will come together Oct. 26 as Petty has been named Grand Marshal of the Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500. Petty, whose 15 career Martinsville wins stand alone as the most all-time at the historic half-mile track, will say the most famous words in motorsports when he gives the command to start the engines. "Having Richard Petty serve as the Grand Marshal of the Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500 at a historic track like Martinsville is a testament to his legendary career in NASCAR and his long-time partnership with the Goody's brand," said Joseph Juliano, Brand Director, Goody's. "It is a true honor to be associated with the King of Speed, and we are extremely fortunate to have a living legend like Richard Petty on the Goody's team."(Martinsville Speedway)(10-17-2014)

Mixed Martial Arts star Miesha Tate to wave green flag at Martinsville: Close quarters' full-contact action is something mixed martial arts star Miesha Tate does every time she steps into the octagon. Martinsville Speedway is also no stranger to close quarters' full-contact action. The two will come together when the Sprint Cup Series returns to the iconic half-mile track on Oct. 26. UFC's number two ranked women's bantamweight fighter was named the honorary starter and will drop the green flag to start the Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500.(

Marching Tar Heels to play National Anthem at Martinsville: From presidential inaugurations to Final Fours, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Marching Tar Heels have performed nearly everywhere; everywhere except Martinsville Speedway. That is, until now. Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell announced The Marching Tar Heels will perform the National Anthem as part of the prerace ceremonies for the Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500 Oct. 26. The UNC Band was formed in the fall of 1903 and performed for the first time at a 1904 baseball game. In the early 1930s the band began performing at home football games and other university events. As they enter their second 100 years of existence, the UNC Bands continue to represent the Department of Music, the Athletic Department and the University at events on campus and around the country. More than 450 students, representing nearly every major on campus, participate in the UNC Bands.(

Warbirds Will Take To The Air Over Martinsville Speedway History will come alive once again, both on the track and in the air, as Martinsville Speedway welcomes back The Warbirds Flyover Team for the Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500 Oct. 26. The Warbirds, a group of five former military pilots flying vintage post-World War II-type aircraft, will present the pre-race flyover. The Warbirds have performed since 2009 at other sporting events, including the 2013 CokeZero 400 at Daytona International Speedway, the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins football games, and the Players Championship golf tournament. The Warbirds are based out of the Southeast and are led by Henry K. "Hoot" Gibson, a former naval aviator and Gulf War veteran.(

Kahne Helps Promote Breast Cancer Awareness At Martinsville: #5-Kasey Kahne is familiar with the curbs in the turns at Martinsville Speedway. He's raced around them, and sometimes over them, for a decade. Wednesday he got a different view of those curbs as he helped 10 breast cancer survivors paint a section of them pink in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. "Our curbs are famous in the sport. They are iconic," said Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell. "So it is fitting that we paint them pink for such a great cause."
"It's a pretty tough curb," said Kahne, speaking from experience. The curbs will be pink for the Goody's Headache Relief Shot® 500 weekend Oct. 24-26. Chevrolet also rolled out the pink Chevrolet SS Sedan pace car that will be used for the Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500. It is part of a larger program sponsored by Chevrolet that includes a contribution of $250 for every lap the pace car leads under caution during the race. "Last year we had 111 caution laps in the October race here," said Jeff Chew, marketing manager for Chevrolet's racing program. "I hate to say keep it up, Clay (Campbell), but keep it up and we'll generate some money." This is Chevrolet's fourth year of raising money for the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. To date Chevy's efforts have netted more than $3 million. Tickets to the Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500 on October 26, the Kroger 200 on October 25 and the Virginia Lottery Pole Day on October 24 can be purchased by calling 1.877.RACE.TIX. Tickets may also be purchased online at

Roush to be inducted into Kentucky Motorsports Hall of Fame: Legendary motorsports team owner and innovator Jack Roush has long been identified with the state of Michigan, where his corporate empire is headquartered in Livonia (suburban Detroit). While he may have committed the last several decades of his racing career to the blue oval of Ford, the man nicknamed "The Cat In the Hat" is actually a native of the Bluegrass State. And because of that distinction, Roush, who was born in Covington, Ky., will be one of 13 new members inducted Saturday into the Kentucky Motorsports Hall of Fame in Owensboro. Induction into the Kentucky Hall is one of countless honors Roush has received in his career, including the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.(

2014 Qualifying Rules and Notes
-
NOTE there is no longer a Top-35 rule. That rule was done away with after the 2012 season
-
Qualifying Rules: Each team must send a representative for a random drawing at a time and location designated by NASCAR. The order of the random drawing will be conducted in accordance with owner championship points for cars that have entered by the Entry deadline, starting with the highest points holder. Until the completion of three (3) Events of the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, the final 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship car owner points standings will be used for determining the order of the random draw. After the third (3rd) completed Event and until the completion of the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, the current 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship car owner points standings will be used for determining the order of the random draw. This drawing will be made at a time specified on the Schedule of Events on the Official Entry Blank. If the car is not in the Garage area at the time of the drawing, only the driver may draw. If the car is in the Garage area at the time of the drawing, a designated member of the crew may draw. If the driver or car owner or designated member of crew is not present at the time of the drawing, a NASCAR Official will draw for the team.

NASCAR Revises National Series Qualifying Format At Talladega Superspeedway: NASCAR revised its national series qualifying format for Talladega Superspeedway which, in turn, should elevate the on-track competition for fans at the high speed 2.66-mile track. For the Oct. 17-19 events at Talladega featuring both the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, national series qualifying will take on a more rapid pace that should bring out the best in the competitors and provide fans with an extra element of excitement.
Keystone Light Pole Qualifying for the Fred's 250 powered by Coca-Cola NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 17 at 5:30pm/et and will air live on FOX Sports 1. Coors Light Pole Qualifying for the GEICO 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 18 at 4:30pm/et and will air live on ESPNEWS, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
National series qualifying at Talladega will now consist of the following:
· Three rounds with the first round divided into two groups amongst the competitors. The first qualifying round is five minutes in length for each group.
· Competitors will be assigned to a first qualifying round group based on the random draw held earlier in the event.
· The 24 eligible competitors that post the fastest single lap speed from either of the first qualifying round groups will advance to the second round. The remaining competitors will be sorted based on their speed posted in the first round of qualifying in descending order.
· There will be a 10-minute break after the completion of the first qualifying round and the 24 remaining competitors that advance to the second round will have their times reset.
· The second qualifying round is five minutes in length and the 12 eligible competitors that post the fastest single lap speed will advance to the third and final round.
· The fastest remaining competitors will earn positions 13-24 based on their fastest single lap speed posted in qualifying in descending order.
· Following a five minute break, the 12 eligible competitors that advance to the final round will have their posted speeds reset.
· The final qualifying round is five minutes in length and the fastest single lap speed will determine positions 1-12 in descending order.
"This revision in national series qualifying at Talladega should be more exciting for our fans," said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR senior vice president of competition and racing development. "It will feature a more accelerated pace, provide greater opportunity for team strategy to come into play and it should more closely resemble actual racing conditions."(NASCAR)(9-4-2014)
And in another surprise move by Brainless and NUTSCAR:
Qualifying at Martinsville will be the same as Talladega except the sessions will be reduced from 5 minutes down to 2 minutes and the Crews will have to push the Car and Driver around the Track while blindfolded.

The new chase format is working out soooo well; 600,000 less viewers for the 2014 Telladega race compared to last year. (I was one of them)
http://beyondtheflag.com/2014/10/21/nascar-espn-announces-talladega-ratings/
A few years ago I fell in love, rather quickly, with the smell of burnt Sunoco fuel, the individuality of the teams, drivers, cc’s, and the soap-box like drama from week to week. Then - change. It’s kinda like my political party - I’m still here but they left me. Breaking up should be hard to do but NASCAR is making the decision pretty easy for me.
