5 years ago, I purchased an LG front load washer and dryer set. My expectations were as high as the price. About 2 years into it, the first washing machine failed and after many life intruding service calls, I got a new machine under the "lemon" provision of the warranty. This past Sunday, my "new" washer took a dump. Tub won't move. It will run an entire washing cycle and the tub never moves an inch. I have no warranty left and am not inclined to throw any more good money after bad.
We're gong back to a top loader and steering clear of LG and Samsung.
What say ye on the best top loader washer dryer combo today?
Aside from the inconvenience and expense, this experience has solved one problem for me. I now have a target for the family Thanksgiving Day shoot!

Top loader, Kenmore. Although it probably doesn't really matter much on the make.
Maytag, Amana, and Kitchen Aid are all Whirlpool brands.
We have 12 year old models of top loading Amana washer (commercial quality, super capacity plus) and front loading Amana dryer (same). Love them both! Have only had one issue with the dryer, which needed a new ball bearing about a year or so ago. Otherwise, they are working great!
Electrolux just bought GE’s line of appliances.
My Kenmore front loader from around 1999/2000 seems fine.
We’ve had an LG pair for five or six years. No problems with these front loading machines.
Every week or so, we leave the washer door open to let it dry out.
The only thing I don’t like is the tendency for sheets to be rolled into long twists, with smaller items rolled up inside.
I had the same experience with my pasta maker.
Avoid front loaders like the plague (I guess you already figured that out.)
Whirlpool owns Maytag now, so they often make the exact same machine with two different brand labels. Whirlpool and Maytag branded appliances in general are among the best. Also, Whirlpool is about the only vendor that makes decent Sears appliances.
Buying Sears is tricky because you have to know who really manufactured the product for Sears to know whether it’s any good. Here’s the magic key for decoding Sears model numbers to determine who actually makes them:

We did the same. Our stupid nanny state washer with some cockamamie water saving feature is absolutely insane, and cannot be disconnected. It uses a small amount of water and my wife actually sets a timer and goes back downstairs to dump a bucket of water in it. The water level doesn’t clean clothes enough to even get the soap wet. We also use about 30% of recommended amount of soap.
My sister spent many years as a repairman and fixed hundreds of washers and dryers. She always told me to by Whirlpool.
My wife and I bought a Whirlpool set in March 1982 the week after we married. We replaced that set in 1996 with another Whirlpool set and still have that set today.
The only thing I have replaced is two dryer drum belts (one on each dryer owned), one dryer heating element and one lint trap filter on our current dryer.
By the way, the dryer filters on the top of the machine are safer than the filters located on the bottom inside the door. Lint that gets through the bottom filters will collect directly on the heating elements and can be a fire hazard.
We use one bar of Fels Naptha (grated on cheese grater - small holes), 1.5 cups each of 20 Mule Team Borax and A&H Super Washing Soda.
We've seen other ratios out there (1 bar to two or three cups each of the borax and soda), but this works for us.
May be a door sensor issue, and not a burned out bulb. If the light stays off and the machine keeps running, it's definitely not getting the right signal somewhere.
The family I bought mine from said that the mother bought it new in 1962 and used it until she moved into assisted living in 2001. It came with all the original tags and literature.
What is interesting is the ability to start with 20 gallons of hot water, running whites and bedsheets, then the same hot water for dress shirts, then dark slacks and black socks, then dark tee shirts, then the last load of heavily soiled denim workclothes. 5 loads on one full tub of hot water and 2 rinse tubs of cold. That’s undoubtedly more “water efficient” than the “makes your laundry smell like mold” save the planet HE front-loaders...
One day I will find the girl of my dreams... one that that gets as excited as I do about laundry day. I mean, no more going down to the crick and beating my clothes on a rock... I have upgraded to all the modern conveniences... All made with the modern housewife in mind!

Yep. I hate to say it but Maytag is the greatest. I just finally lost my Maytag dryer after 27 years of service and it was used when I got it. You cannot go wrong with Maytag.

pregnant in the summer so she won’t want to leave home... barefoot in the winter so she can’t leave the home.
I think many years ago it was products. At 65, I’m in kind of a time warp where the ‘80’s were just last week.
It’s good to have a dream...LOL!!
Since ours was gone by the time I was old enough to be tasked with doing the laundry, I wasn’t aware of those water-saving attributes you mentioned.
