'We thought he was crazy and begged him not to go back': Parents of NBC reporter with Ebola reveal how he refused to listen to pleas to stay in the U.S. as they meet his air ambulance in Nebraska

Ashoka Mukpo, a freelance cameraman from Rhode Island, is being treated at Nebraska Medical Center and is in 'good spirits' but tired

He was flown in on a medical flight from Liberia on Monday

The 33-year-old returned to Liberia on September 4 and had been working with NBC when he fell ill last week

He may have contracted the virus while spray-washing a car that had carried someone who later died of Ebola

His father, Dr Mitchell Levy, mother British aristocrat Lady Diana Judith Mukpo and British girlfriend Helen, traveled to Nebraska

Dr Levy said: 'I'm proud of him but I told him he was crazy'

Dr Levy said Ashoka had spent three years in Liberia working for an NGO but returned to the U.S. in May. As the Ebola crisis deepened, the 33-year-old wanted to return because of his strong connection to the country and its people.

Dr Levy said: 'Our son is strong-willed and determined. He has always lived by his integrity. He made a strong connection with the Liberian people and felt compelled to go back.

'I told him I thought he was crazy and I told him about the risks but none of it worked. I'm proud of him but I wished he would go somewhere else.'

He has spent three years working the country and returned to cover the health crisis.

Mr Gold added: 'It wasn't abnormal to drive down the street with him and have numerous people call out his name and wave.'

I am curious how he got the disease.

Presumably he knew not to touch a symptomatic person or their bodily fluids.

Same with the doctors (although by the nature of their job, it might be unavoidable) who got the disease.

I get the distinct feeling we are being lied to and the disease spreads by fomites (that is things touched by sick people or sneezed on, etc), is at lease partially airborne, or there is an animal vector that has not been considered (insect bite, dog slobber, etc).

I hear you.

On the other hand, these idiots are not going to spread the disease in the USA, since we know they are infected and can take the necessary precautions. I am eager for the hospitals to have a wealth of information on the disease and procedures how to handle it before it spins out of control (which it will).

Consider them training tools for the epidemic to come.

The 33-year-old, who returned to Liberia on September 4, believes that he may have contracted the virus while spray-washing a car that had carried someone who later died of Ebola.

You are right...my big question is how will the disease fare in a cooler climate like the north or north east. It doesn’t get too cold in those African holes.

Oh boo hoo. He’s in good spirits but tired?

Our suicidal gov’t welcomes all who have O’Bola.

Total insanity.

“our son is strong willed and determined” ?

Determined to spread O’Bola?

These are democrat voters. The stupid is strong in that family.

When his innards liquefy, then he will be weak and undetermined.

Ebola would survive in the Artic circle if it could find a way to go from primates/man as long as their body temp was 96-106 degrees F. As long as ebola has a host, it will use it up and hopefully jump. It wants to survive, multiply, and spread.....

It is senstitive to extreme cold, extreme heat, chorine, and UV light though. It is very wimpy outside the host after 5-6 DAYS.

Ah, kind of like Jose and Manuel who were sent to use a pressure washer wearing shorts to clean up vomit from Patient Zero in Dallas.

What follows is my Personal Opinion Only:

The patient comes from a very weird family and is very much a screwball himself. I have an ugly suspicion that he infected himself intentionally — out of some loony ideation.

I hope you are correct.

Of course, getting the disease early when there are teams of doctors for each patient, instead of the triage that will come might be a brilliant idea.

He was there for “social justice” so let them pay his costs. Doctor father/British aristocrat mother, one would imagine they can afford to pay for their son’s idiocy. Sounds like he’s ‘guilty’ for all his ‘white privilege.” I’ve got one of those, too, but poor thing doesn’t have aristocrat parents.
