What good are lapel cams and microphones if the cops are disabling them? Why arent they being fired for this?
No one likes to be monitored, says Sid Heal, recently retired commander who evaluated technology during his decades-long tenure at the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department. And? If you do not want to be filmed and recorded dont be a cop.
According to the arstechnica.com, The Los Angeles Police Commission is investigating how half of the recording antennas in the Southeast Division went missing, seemingly as a way to evade new self-monitoring procedures that the Los Angeles Police Department imposed last year.

They don’t.
Many models the device in the trunk. Camera in the car. No indications of operation.
No way to tell if it breaks and/or stops.
Like taking a pee. . .? Eating lunch?
“Police work, by it’s nature is not amenable to video recording.
Effective law enforcement requires the effective use of officer discretion and on the spot judgment.
Having a running video log robs the officer of of his most valuable asset, which is his discretion. “
Bull on all levels. Tell us, how does video evidence removed ‘discretion’? And exactly what is that discretion? To shoot people and then lie about them making ‘an aggressive move’? A lot of criminal cops, or just tin gods, have been dealt with because of video evidence of their actions. Remove that, and what will we use to keep them in line? Cops have made it clear they won’t control their own. “He’s my brother officer! So what if he wrongfully killed that kid.” They control the whole situation, making it easy to dispose of evidence they don’t like.
News flash, when a crime happens, it is cops called to investigate it. When it is a cop accused of a crime, his BUDDIES are the initial investigators and handle the evidence.
These cameras are the only real tool we have to controlling the punks infesting LE. The ego nuts, my crap don’t stink, incompetent mistakes, corrupt behavior, our right CYA lies, on and on.
There are a lot of huge problems with LE, and cameras are the only real tool for addressing them. AND THAT IS WHY COPS HATE THEM.
“Cause we live in an era where cracking one ethnically insensitive joke could land them on the unemployment line.
Exactly.”
No it isn’t. Most videos would never be viewed unless there was a reason to see it. There isn’t going to be a team watching every cop’s video from start to finish, just in case.
It would only come up if an accusation was made. And that is the real reason for the call for cameras. And that is the real reason cops hate them. They know it will finally provide proof of their unprofessional actions and crimes. They are afraid it WILL prove an accusation is well founded, instead of being a ‘he said, she said” situation against a cop.
And you two know it.
“So imagine the unhappiness of liberals right now, finding out that the police do not want and will not tolerate being monitored by their betters.”
Who told them they get to choose what they tolerate? And it isn’t their “betters” or liberals, it is the citizens they supposedly serve who are tired of the garbage coming from LE.
“They are inferiors and should be treated as such. Sneering contempt.”
Funny, since that is how more and more cops treat citizens. Cops love heaping their attitudes onto others, knowing the subject is impotent to do anything about it. Of course a camera catching a cop giving ‘tude would change that.
“Nor do uniforms make them unthinking automatons who will obey orders without question.”
You mean the same ego maniacs that expect us to obey their orders without question? They work for us and they will do as they are told. If society decides that honest cops must be monitored to ‘prove’(Some would say force) their honesty and good conduct, that that is what will happen.
If a cop doesn’t like that, quit. We don’t need his corrupt help.
No it isnt. Most videos would never be viewed unless there was a reason to see it. There isnt going to be a team watching every cops video from start to finish, just in case.
...
And you two know it.
Thing is, I’m thinking about the relatively rare “good” cops. and it’s true that normal human behavior can be misconstrued and when every word is recorded, you can’t function in your job in a PC world.
The cops in my area don’t have these cameras on purpose. And one of them candidly admitted it is because some perps come in a bit, uh, roughed up. But it is a small community and everyone knows everyone. Things are handled a bit more old school out here. Saves a lot of taxpayer money.

And you think it isn’t even remotely possible they might ‘rough up’ the occasional innocent person? That is the problem with ‘old school’.
This isn’t a school. This is people’s lives that a cop can screw over because he felt dissed. Blunt fact, if they deliberately choose not to record because they know it will film wrong actions, they are criminal cops. That is a deliberate decision to cover form crimes. Is that what we pay cops to do? Or do we pay them to stop crime?
I have zero respect for that, and my understanding of their concerns is just as dead.
as for
“and its true that normal human behavior can be misconstrued and when every word is recorded, you cant function in your job in a PC world.”
We’re supposed to operate in the world with them watching our actions. And cops have only themselves to blame. They made the choice to create the Thin Blue Line. If they had policed their own, we wouldn’t have to do it for them.
I prefer old school, but like to do our best to weed out the guys that don’t function well in a position of authority in that paradigm.
Of course, it’s a failed paradigm as we are learning in another institution where “old school” has run its course and bit us in the butt. That would be the congress.
I’m gonna sound like I’m talking outa both sides of my mouth when I say this, but I agree with that post.
The answer is simple,
No Recording, No testify, case dismissed.
Public Servant held PERSONALLY Liable for ALL COSTS as well as ANY damages to the Victim.
First Offense: Misdemeanor, 30 days in Jail and $1000 fine
Second Offense: Felony- 5 Years in Prison
Just like carrying a Firearm without Government Permission
Ridiculous. I have a dash cam.
It’s not only in their interest, if they can’t make sure that a camera is working they are no where near mentally fit to be out in society with a gun and a car.
Well said.
as the Powers That Be like to tell us mere citizens “if you aren’t doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about”.
word to the officer: YOU work for US. if you don’t like your bosses, and the new working conditions, well this is what every place I’ve ever worked suggested : get another job.
You have an incorrect axiom.
First of all, police do not “work for us”. They work for their local government. Which is why when they work for liberals their attitude is crappy in the first place.
Seriously, compare the LAPD, their morale, their behavior, their public relations, etc., with the PD of a properly run red state city. It’s completely different.
A great example of this was when the corrupt, brutal, and ineffective NYPD, which had regular investigations and pressure applied to it all the time under David Dinkins, was completely turned around by Rudy Giuliani.
He started by telling them they were worthy of respect and important to the city. And he showed it by removing a lot of b.s. the city had inflicted on them, and giving them a strategy and tactics to get tangible, positive results.
Their morale jumped. Corruption evaporated. Harassment and abuse of citizens plummeted. And everyone in the city saw things getting better. Cops were happy and doing their job professionally and well.
So in the final analysis, treat police fairly, and they will treat the public well. Of course there will always be a few bad actors, but if the police are doing well, they do not want and will not tolerate such behavior themselves.
The proof of this is that uniform cameras are pretty common around PDs in the US already. When they are “sold” to cops as *protecting* them from criminals who lie about them, the cops usually embrace them. But if the cops are ordered to wear them, “So if you screw up we can nail you”, it’s no surprise that the cops are not enthused.
Good for you.
Apparently you do not understand the hard-drive/wireless unit in the trunk situation where the police officer is not able to know if it is working or not.
He trusts the display in the window unit but that doesn't mean the wireless signal is functioning (transmitting data back to the main drive) and/or the units hard drive is still recording and not crashed and giving a false signal.
Computers never crash. . .ever.
Point is, you demand firings/suspensions if the unit stops recording and make no allowance for a malfunctioning system. Unit breaks, fire him.
I visited a PD and examined the units and their recording devices and found out how it works, played with the switches. Interesting. You pay taxes so you have a right to see what your tax dollars are buying. I was curious so I went there one day and wanted to see. . .and they were happy to show off the system. You are saying the police officer must have the ability to know at all times if the unit in the trunk—the recording/transmitting unit—is functioning. The thing breaks, too bad, you are fired. . .even though he has no indication of failure.
Have a nice day. Buh-bye.

That issue is not nonexistent. But make no mistake, the technology is not nearly as fragile as cops would like to claim. And it is mighty convenient that when a cop gets accused, his device fails.
LE has to deal with the sabotage issues like in this article. At least if they want any credibility for their failure claims.
I can't envision someone worried about getting fired or sued for doing their job...Unless their job requires they break the law...
I've seen the "360 while passing on an icy road".
Has anyone done a "720" yet?
How do you say, "YeeeHaaa!" in Russian?
And any arrest made or ticket issued while the camera is down should be automatically dismissed.
Video can at times be like judging ice skating and depending on who is doing the interpretation they could be protected or condemned by the same video.
IMO they should want it.
