Henry Rollins Slams Robin Williams For Suicide: If You Kill Yourself, You “Blew It”
The Gossip Cop ^ | 08/21/2014 | Daniel Gates

Rollins writes, “I am sure some will strongly disagree with what I’m about to say. And I also understand that his personal struggles were quite real. I can’t argue with that.”

He adds:

“But I simply cannot understand how any parent could kill themselves.”

“How in the hell could you possibly do that to your children?

That being said, I still say his “Liar” should be the Obama theme song.

A similar thought occurred to me while observing a devastated friend and his wife trying to deal with the suicide of their son. So it goes the other way, too. Almost anything is better suicide; it leaves a very deep and wide swath of emotional destruction through those who loved you most. I think few of them ever fully recover from it.

My stepsister found her father hanging from the rafters in the garage when she was six or seven. Screwed that girl and her brother up for life. Very selfish thing to do.

The way I look at it. Suicide due to depression takes that pain inside and spreads it. It’s like the vhs tape in The Ring. It ends for you but another has to suffer in your stead.

I’m sure that would be in his mind worth a book of prose all of it’s own.

The suicide of a parent is a very destructive thing, and children of suicides are much more likely to take their own lives. Suicide is, in the end, an extremely selfish act.

I never liked Robin Williams much anyway, because I thought he was all about Robin Williams and somehow he thought that these “wise liberals” he portrayed were really the expression of himself...which they may have been, but he himself was so shallow that after a while nobody cared. Killing himself simply proves that it was all about him.

BTW, one of the best reviews I ever read was in the WSJ, reviewing some movie Robin Williams had made, and it read “Never go to see anything with Robin Williams with a beard.” Those were his “profound” movies. And then the next sentence was “Never go to see anything with Robin Williams without a beard.”

The only movie he made that I liked was Moscow on Hudson, which was not political and was actually quite funny. I don’t remember whether or not he had a beard in that one...

Williams, like most of Hollywood, was owned by the Democratic Party.

People don’t realize just how their tentacles run in Hollywood, and how much they control who works and who doesn’t.

To get along, you go along. If they tell you that you have to make fun of Sarah Palin, that’s what you do.

His ex-wives must be so distraught over all that money that won’t be coming in.

I am going to quit reading the posts on this topic, so many hateful, nasty people. My last one comment...my Dad left my brother, mom, me and our families with a gunshot to his head at the young age of 58. He was NO COWARD! He was a sick man in the end, both mentally and physically. Comments like yours are why families like mine are filled with additional pain and shame after the suicide of a loved one. You don’t know their hearts or their pain when life becomes so unbearable that they feel they have no other options. Seriously, makes me sick....

How horrible. I guess there can be profound depressions that probably put one in a state that is virtually like madness and probably then suicide isn’t really something that they have chosen with free will.

But most of the suicides I have known (and for some reason, I’ve known 3) were known for fantasizing or talking about it or using the threat of suicide to control family members, and it wasn’t a sudden first-time thing. In fact, one of them actually set it up so he would be discovered before he died and thus be brought to the emergency room and saved. Unfortunately, the person he thought would discover him was out of town...

In my opinion, suicide is a last-ditch attempt for attention and pity, or an attempt to place guilt on people around the suicide for not having been attentive enough to his or her “needs.” And children and family be damned.

IMHO, the Parkinson’s diagnosis may have been the last straw, or even as suggested, the drugs he was taking to deal with the Parkinson’s may have made things worse.

Sorry, no go. Socrates was right--it's not yours to take. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

Your father was probably profoundly depressed, which actually is a form of mental illness, and in his day, treatments may have been scarce or not as effective for this. In addition, if he had physical ailments, the doctors may not have been treating the whole patient, so to speak.

But there are many other people who are not sick and not even really depressed. Those are the ones who write the long, reproachful hate-filled “suicide notes” that the family never mentions.

Unless or until you’ve fallen so deep into a hole that you feel you can never climb out of where the pain is unbearable- where everything becomes a struggle- where you see no hope and feel only pain from the circumstances in your life- you cannot begin to comprehend what goes on in the mind of a person who contemplates suicide or the so called “selfish “ reasons.

Suicides want the pain to end and see only one way to do that....death. Many do not want to be a burden to their friends and family any longer. They just want it to be over and done with. They want the pain they are feeling to stop. They see NO HOPE and NO other options. They see only one way to make the pain go away.

Suicide is absolutely heart wrenching for everyone involved but especially for the tortured soul who takes their own life.

I agree it’s the chicken shit way out! I know too many children living in hell for the rest of their lives when their parent proved they were no parent at all! It’s happened in my family and it’s happened to friends. I am still angry any one could leave a kid like this no matter how old the kid is!

I agree with what you've said. There are people who go out into the wilderness to kill themselves whose skeletons aren't found for a century, but many do seem to be trying to hurt a loved one who somehow didn't love them enough.

One of the things I've learned about suicide to prevent the worst kind of guilt trip imaginable is never to be drawn into a discussion of the particulars of suicide. One acquaintance drew me into a discussion about how I would do it IF I ever felt I had to do it. Sure enough, about a year later, he did it in precisely that fashion. The police said it was a good shot. I've felt guilty about it ever since.

And then that kid I mentioned earlier, there was something about his suicide that comported exactly with a discussion we had once had...

My new policy if someone wants to talk particulars is... DON'T. Ask them how they're doing, whether they are okay, are they having girlfriend problems, etc. Y'know, just try to be helpful, supportive, more understanding, nicer, less demanding, no more smacking them around and telling them to man up like Corleone would do.
